PayPal protection on the purchase of used devices
Good evening, I’m interested in buying a used Apple device through Ebay. However, I have no experience and I’d like to be aware of the risks I’m taking and how far Ebay’s warranty covers me. If the device turns out to be locked/stolen, is the buyer the only one who loses out, or is he protected by the platform? In theory, it’s the seller who did not meet Ebay’s requirements, and therefore the dispute is resolved in favor of the buyer? Is using Paypal recommended? Does it offer further extended protection for any specific cases?
Also, could you give me some tips to follow to make safe purchases on Ebay? Specifically, it’s an Ipad.
I asked the seller for the receipt (which he was able to provide), a photo of the unlocked ipad, and the serial code — anything else?
Thanks in advance for your help!

·2 years agoGood evening,
it is good practice to distinguish between the "guarantees" that can be meant.
Both eBay and Paypal can guarantee that the item arrives as described, but the legal warranty, or the one understood to be 24 months when buying a new product, is not transferred to the new customer when selling a used item, so even if he provided you with a receipt for his purchase, it has no value.
If the seller is a private individual, that warranty does not exist.
You can't even have any guarantee that the seller will actually send you what he photographed... so, to be clear, all online purchases are like a lottery... it might go well for you, or it might not...
So you can rely on the "guarantees" offered by both eBay and Paypal, which heavenwelkin explained to you thoroughly.
Best regards.

·2 years agoYou wrote in your post that you are buying a used device.
For a used device, a private seller cannot offer a warranty.
For a used device, a professional seller can give you a 3-, 6-, or more-month warranty.
But the warranty is one thing, while eBay or PayPal buyer protection works regardless of whether an item has a warranty or not.
For the warranty, you have to contact the seller.
For buyer protection, NO.
If the seller sends you a locked device (whether intentionally or not), you can bypass any warranty offered by the seller to open an eBay and/or PayPal dispute for an item not as described.
Kind regards.

Purchases on eBay are covered by buyer protection, which consists of the possibility of opening a claim for item not as described within 30 days from the estimated delivery date set by eBay.
If the item is found to be not as described, the seller must pay the return shipping costs and must arrange with the buyer to provide a shipping label and/or another alternative solution, always at the seller’s expense.
The buyer, once the item has been sent back to the seller, will receive a full refund that includes 100% of what was paid (item + shipping costs).
If you think 30 days are not enough, by paying with PayPal you have protection that extends up to 180 days.
If a problem comes up within 30 days, you can start a claim process with eBay directly.
If the problem occurs after 30 days and within 180 days, you can open a claim procedure directly with PayPal.
Kind regards.
