Am I entitled to a refund if I don’t pick up an item after it’s been held for the full storage period?
Summary: The thread discusses the right to a refund for an item not collected after the storage period expired. fran-99541 raises the issue and several participants, including sika700 and amerigo-collections, respond in an attempt to clarify the consumer’s rights in these circumstances. The discussion involves looking for up-to-date information on refund policies.
Good morning, I have a question about an issue that I’ll try to explain briefly.
At the end of December I bought an item that was supposed to be a gift for a child for Epiphany. Delivery was scheduled for January 2-3, so, to be on the safe side and avoid failed delivery attempts, I selected delivery to an eBay pickup point, whose details were already entered in the system.
Despite this selection, however, the first delivery attempt was unsuccessful for "incomplete details", so I contacted the seller to unblock the delivery, which however took place almost a week after Epiphany, and of course in the meantime I had arranged something else for the gift.
Now, since I no longer need the item, up to today I have not collected the parcel at the pickup point so that it would be returned to the seller, but I don’t know whether I will be refunded later, and neither does the seller, since he says the funds are on hold.
To cut a long story short, then, I thought I would collect the parcel (I have until tomorrow) and send it back to the sender through a return request, but then I discovered that the label is paid for and honestly it doesn’t seem right at all to have to pay for a mistake I didn’t make, considering that, having selected the eBay pickup point, it’s certainly not my fault if the parcel arrived very late.
So the question is: if I don’t collect the parcel and it is returned to the sender, am I entitled to a refund by virtue of the return request I have already opened, or do I absolutely have to collect it and send it back with the paid label?
Thanks to anyone who replies.

·5 months agoIn my opinion, you should also compensate the seller for the trouble caused, and I sincerely hope eBay brings back negative feedback for buyers too.

I agree with you that if the buyer fails to collect the item, they should be faced with some kind of "penalty".
Unfortunately though, Amazon fully refunds uncollected parcels.
Vinted, wallapop and subito do the same thing Amazon does.
eBay would be going against the trend; from experience I can tell you that, despite the rules saying one thing, it often happens that the buyer gets a full refund in situations where an item is not delivered for reasons not attributable to the seller.
So, despite what the rules say, it is ALWAYS BETTER to avoid TAKING A RISK and going against a buyer.
If something unexpected happens, it is good practice to contact the buyer and try to understand where the problem is and whether it can be solved somehow, rather than having the buyer open a dispute for an item not received, because the seller does not always manage to win it.
And then there would always be PayPal claims or chargebacks.....
As for negative feedback, it would certainly be useful to highlight those time-wasting users who do not keep their commitments and do not collect items, but then it would be a step back, the era when buyers knew that leaving an unflattering feedback for the seller meant receiving an equally unflattering one on their own account.
Best regards.

·2 years agoNo, if you do not voluntarily pick up the parcel you will not be entitled to any refund, that is what the rules say.
It didn’t even make any sense to open a return request for an item you don’t have in your hands yet.
So, the correct procedure is to pick up the parcel and return it for your change of mind, since you no longer need it, of course at your own expense... you can only do so if the seller accepts returns.
Kind regards.

OP2 years agoThe correct procedure actually seems to me more like a way to make people waste money unnecessarily, given that the seller has anyway received the package back. Besides, I don't see why I should have had to pay for a label error not made by me, since the pickup point details were already entered in the system and I didn't have to enter them manually.
I will never buy anything on eBay again
Thanks anyway for the reply.

·2 years agoThe package was delivered anyway despite some problem that can happen.
I repeat, if you don't pick it up, the responsibility is yours.

Very good, I've had tons of buyers who open unreasonable claims, the fewer of them there are the better it will be for all sellers.
Once a buyer had opened a claim even though the package showed as delivered, when I suggested reporting the case to the postal police he immediately said he had just received the package from Santa Claus...
Have a good day
