Private purchase protection (no returns)
Hello everyone,
I would like to buy a musical instrument (a trumpet) from a private seller, very far from where I live, and who does not accept returns.
Is there any protection in case the item has damage not indicated in the listing?

first of all I apologize for the delay, but I did not receive notifications of your replies (I will check whether I ticked or unticked something that caused me not to receive the reply notifications).
Regarding the phrase "very far from where I live," I meant that I tend to proceed with a remote purchase.
Just to make it more complicated: what if the seller is in China? Shipping costs start to become significant, and on top of that there is customs and, I imagine, something else... How would you do it in this case?

If the seller is in China or outside the EU territories, you need to handle the export of the goods, and there is a whole series of procedures to follow, since export costs are the buyer’s responsibility.
For more details, I invite you to use the forum search engine with the search term "customs costs / fees" and you will find many answers and details on the matter.
For the moment I recommend focusing on shipments only within Italy and/or at most within the EU, then with time and the necessary experience maybe try some extra-EU shipments as well.

if you already have doubts about it, it’s better to leave it alone... because in any case the customs fees in the event of a return will never be refunded.

When you write "very far from where I live" do you mean that you will drive some miles to go and pick up the item or do you mean that you will proceed with a distance purchase?
Because if you buy at a distance with shipping, it doesn't matter how far an item is from your home.
You can also buy at a distance with shipping from a private seller who is 10km from your home and the same rules apply / are applied to shipped items.
As sika700 wrote, if you buy at a distance (that is, you have the item shipped to you) on eBay you can benefit from buyer protection in case of items not as described, you can read the details here:

If instead you mean to buy the item in person, first of all you must pay for it with an electronic payment such as PayPal or credit card (no cash), and then it is necessary to provide proof that the exchange took place, so a code is needed; for details see here:

the fact that the private seller doesn't accept returns refers only and exclusively to change of mind.
If the item does not match the description, you can freely open a return request for non-conformity and the seller, even if private, is obliged to accept... if they don't, you can have eBay step in for sure help!
