Do you think it’s normal for ebay to behave like this?
I’ve been selling used items since last century, I’m a private individual, I don’t do huge volumes, but I still carry out my little mission (which I like to think of as eco-friendly) of keeping materials that are still useful and usable from ending up in landfill.
Lately my listings have concerned one item available in quantity, which I resell as used but still fully functional. For this reason I’ve gathered several orders, as well as positive feedback that by itself attests to my honesty and reliability. I’ve therefore accumulated on these listings several "items already sold" and also many "users watching my item" to whom, periodically as a promotion, I send offers to convince them further. What does some "genius" in ebay’s security department do? He decides it’s time to verify my identity, puts my account under "restriction" and, hear hear, deletes my listings. One might agree with the periodic identification check (they had never done it to me before), even the suspension of sales is understandable, but wiping out the listings, their history, and the watchers is definitely not. After restoring my full operational status I called support to see whether the listings could also be restored; they told me they were sorry for what happened, that I have full availability for listings, that the sales limits are high (because of my honesty and accuracy), but that they can do nothing to restore the listings because the "department" (the genius) is not the sales one and communication even with the other internal departments is possible only via "email" and they normally do not reply. In practice I have to start from scratch, yes, from the accumulated feedback, but with reduced visibility because of an identity "verification" decided by the "genius" who did not even bother to safeguard my visibility. We’re in the hands of a bunch of bureaucratic idiots.... who, in the morning, draw lots and without understanding anything decide to penalize you... while maybe they leave the scammers in peace, continuing to practice their "different kind of honesty".

OP2 years agoI don't have the hundreds of listings that you have; I definitely sold within the limits considered "occasional" specified in the DAC7 directive, and in any case I understand the identity check (that's fine, even if it's already known from registration), but I still don't see what this has to do with deleting the listings (in good conscience, I expected them to be restored after the restrictions were lifted).
I wrote about what happened to grasp the rationale, but also to understand whether this is an isolated incident, an unwritten rule, or maybe something that happened to others from which we can infer the rules being applied.
Honestly, I think bringing the rationale back to the tax issue tied to sales is "a bit of a random shot", especially in light of the fact that eBay is subject to "reporting" not "restriction" nor (yet?) to "taxation".

Mentore2 years agoI was referring to identity verification, you sold few items but the value is high, that's why there's verification & account restriction, I won't comment on the removal of listings because I don't have any certainty about it.
I have many items for sale, but the total value of my sales is well below €2,000.00, it's not even half of that in 12 months, and the transactions are also very few, less than half of 30.

I think that’s exactly the reason, photovoltaic panels are really a lot for a private seller.

OP2 years agoThis can happen too, but they should say it plainly, instead eBay tells me I can sell up to 1000 items and 28000 euros in a month, EBAY not a user who "thinks" it's too much or too little...

Mentore2 years agoEven though it’s already been discussed, I think it’s useful to repost an informational post for private sellers regarding DAC07 regulations, hoping that many users will read it and, once aware, later avoid blaming the platform.
This is a new European regulation aimed at combating tax evasion linked to online commerce. In fact, DAC7 has been in force since July 1, 2021, but it was expanded and amended with the new directive published in March 2023.
In short: to remain a private seller you must meet certain parameters, namely a maximum of 29 transactions and a maximum of 2,000 euros, so fewer than 30 transactions and for which the amounts paid do not exceed 2,000 euros. If these limits are exceeded, platforms are obliged to report the data of all sellers, whether they are individuals or legal entities.
