Buyer opened everything, tore one card and now wants a refund 😡

Hi everyone,
I'm writing to share a bad experience and see if others have had similar cases (and how they were resolved).
I sold a sealed Pokémon 151 box (Chinese version), obviously as a collectible.
The buyer, after a few days, opens all the packs in the box, tears at least one card (he admitted it in the messages, saying he did it to check whether it was authentic), and only after that writes to me claiming that the cards “are not authentic” and wants a refund.
Now, in my opinion, this is absurd: if he had doubts, he just had to message me before opening everything. Instead, he completely tampered with the item, making it unsellable.
Besides, the cards are not fake: I’ve sold the exact same boxes to other buyers with no problems.
I contacted eBay support, and they told me to send a return label or refund him…
but I’m wondering: shouldn’t the right to a refund lapse if the item has been damaged and tampered with? We’re not talking about jeans or a phone case, but about a sealed collectible item!
Has anything similar ever happened to anyone?
Can I defend myself somehow, or do I risk eBay siding with the buyer anyway?

Mentore1 year agoIf the cards are actually not original and if this could have been checked by opening the packs to inspect the hologram, the buyer is right.
If the cards are original, in theory you would be right, but you’ll have a hard time proving they were at the time of shipment (because it’s not certain they’ll still be when they come back), and if the buyer doesn’t make any procedural mistakes, you won’t have any way to avoid the refund
Unfortunately this is one of the risks inherent in distance sales, whatever channel or platform is used. Follow the instructions eBay gave you and try to minimize the damage.
