Purchase from the United Kingdom - tax application
Summary: A discussion about purchasing from the United Kingdom and the application of taxes involves several participants, but the specific details of the concerns or questions are not provided in the posts.
I’d like some information about the application of VAT and duties for purchasing an item from Great Britain. Specifically, it would be a support for a digital microscope bought from an English seller. The item was shipped through Ebay’s shipping system. In addition to the shipping costs, taxes and duties were charged to me amounting to about 25% of the total (cost of the support + shipping costs). The seller was a professional user with a VAT number and according to the agreements signed between the United Kingdom and the EC (EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement, which came into force on May 1, 2021), to allow free trade between goods from the United Kingdom and the EC and vice versa, in the sale of goods between a business and a private individual no duties should be applied and moreover VAT should be charged in the exporting country. So from this it follows that no additional taxes should have been applied to the sale. I contacted Ebay’s support center and the operator, after quite a bit of difficulty getting him to understand the issue, told me that he would open a complaint. But it seems that this was never actually done, since several days have passed without me having heard anything about it from Ebay.
I am therefore asking anyone who knows more than I do for more information and whether I am wrong or right about the matter.
Thanks in advance for the support!

OP1 year agoOk. But by buying from a seller who is charging me VAT, I’m basically paying the same tax twice! In the UK and in Italy. It’s not lawful to charge the same tax twice. I’ve had the experience of buying goods on Aliexpress from China and the seller, for items worth more than 150 euros, reduced the sale price for me by applying the VAT exclusion.
Best regards, Piero

Mentore1 year agoVAT is one thing, and import costs are another!
If the item's value is over €150, eBay does not charge you any tax; the courier will ask you for it.
If the value is lower and the courier, through an invoice, shows you that you are paying VAT a second time, you can ask eBay for a refund.
Kind regards.

Mentore1 year agoYou're wrong.
To import goods from the UK, duties and taxes must be paid. Instead of the seller, the courier or the platform collects them (for the EU).
