Double taxation
Good morning; unable to find confirmation elsewhere, I’m asking you if you have any ideas about what I’ve just come across.
I ordered some items from Japan from a professional seller; I duly paid the VAT and the item was shipped correctly.
upon receipt they asked me (courier) for cash on delivery to pay: assuming they were customs duties, I paid again an amount almost identical to the VAT already paid.
checking online for the type of product purchased there are no customs duties and they confirm that VAT does have to be paid, which, unsurprisingly, matches what the courier asked me for.
Now I’m wondering, is it normal to have to pay twice? And if not, how do I ask eBay (since I doubt I can get a refund any other way) to return the amount already paid?
thank you for your help, Nicola

Mentore3 years agoIt depends on the amount; when it arrives, you have to pay customs charges that depend on the total amount and on the courier handling the clearance. These charges vary between 5 and 25 euros; it could just be a coincidence that they more or less match the VAT already paid.
If, on the other hand, you have a receipt from the courier stating that they also collected the VAT (by mistake), then you can ask for a refund of the amount paid to eBay (or you could download eBay's VAT invoice and ask the courier for the refund). https://www.ebay.it/help/buying/paying-items/pagare-le-imposte-sugli-acquisti-ebay?id=4771&st=3&pos=1&query=Pagare%20le%20imposte%20sugli%20acquisti%20eBay&intent=rimborso%20iva&lucenceai=lucenceai&docId=HELP1425
