Bad experience with a buyer
Good evening, these days I’m going through a rather bizarre experience as a seller. A few days ago I created a listing with variations (the kind where you can select one or more items) made up of 3 selectable items, with a description for each of the 3 individually.
So far so good, I sold 2 of them and had no problems, but with the third one I sold (from the same listing) the problems started...
Basically the buyer accused me of inconsistent description and missing parts (which is absolutely not true), when in reality he selected and bought only that one piece, so obviously I only shipped what he selected and purchased.
I tried to make him understand, to explain politely how it works when you buy from a listing with variations, but he kept refusing to understand at all (or maybe pretending not to), claiming he had bought all 3 pieces (of course I can see exactly what he actually bought, so he can’t fool me).
Now I’m forced to give him a return with refund for no valid reason, with no possibility of maybe explaining the situation to eBay, and I wonder how it’s possible for something like this to happen and for you not to be able to defend yourself? Any advice, experience?

OP2 years agoThanks for your advice, so if I understood correctly I accept the return without writing anything, that way I'm safe...
The important thing is that the item arrives to me working and in the same condition in which I sent it, I don't trust this person (given his behavior), in the dispute he also uploaded a meaningless screenshot (it only shows the title of my listing and not its contents).
Unfortunately it's often hard to stay calm in certain situations, I did my job well, but I'll do what you suggested.

Mentore2 years agoImportant that he asks for the return without bringing up the item's non-conformity with the listing, tell him that you accept the return because he changed his mind (this is the return without reasons, on the buyer's part).

OP2 years agoAt this point he has already opened the dispute with the subject not matching the description, and here I can decide whether to accept or otherwise, so I guess I'm already screwed.
From what you're telling me, I was supposed to start the return procedure, if I understood correctly, or can I still put a reason in when I accept?

Mentore2 years agoNo, no, you don’t have the option to refuse it... if you do nothing, eBay will decide and so you risk losing money and the item.
So now you have to arrange the return at your own expense and then reimburse him.
A piece of advice for next time, since you put up for sale very different items, precisely to avoid the "ignorance" of potential buyers, it would have been better to create three separate listings.
Best regards.

OP2 years agoThanks a lot for the clarification sika700, I’ll refund the dishonest buyer to avoid problems for myself.
I had put the items together because they can be mounted together, but yes, in the end if I had sold them separately I would have avoided problems. I didn’t think there was such a high level of ignorance on the buyer’s part, which I’ve now learned; next time I’ll make them separate.

Mentore2 years agoIf you accept the return without a reason, he pays the return shipping and you get the item back by refunding him in full and only losing the outbound shipping.
If you insist, you risk him disputing the non-conformity and you’ll also lose the return shipping costs (if not worse, meaning the money and the item).
Often you have to try to minimize the damage rather than pursue what we consider the correct solution.
