I bought a used item in Japan, but for customs clearance the FedEx courier is asking me for 27%
I find it really odd that when buying a used item that’s twenty years old, the FedEx Express Italy courier in Lonate Pozzolo (Varese) asks for customs clearance fees equal to 27% of its value. After two certified emails, I still haven’t received a reply; evidently, that’s how US efficiency works. The shipping costs were paid by the seller. Delivery was supposed to take place within 7/15 days, but out of excessive zeal...... they informed me that it will take over 30. Just a heads-up for anyone who may choose to use this courier.

Mentore2 years agoThere are two possibilities:
-If the total cost exceeds 150 euros, VAT and customs duties are collected by the courier, then consider their customs fees. 27% is very little and only makes sense for expensive items that are not subject to customs duty.
-The second hypothesis is for a low-value item, where there are no customs duties and VAT is collected by ebay, but where the fixed costs for the courier fees become significant as a percentage.

The used item in question was paid for at € 262,00 and I was charged € 69,22 for customs clearance, I find that excessive. Please let me know, thank you. Francesco.

Mentore2 years agoIt seems more than normal to me. VAT alone is 22%, then any customs duties and the courier's charges for customs clearance and tax advance. I repeat that the total 27% seems even low to me. In general, I say to budget between 30 and 35%.
