But now, eBay, tells me I have to pay for the item in question. In the meantime I bought the item from another seller. In "My eBay" Offers/Proposals there was no message saying that my proposal was accepted. I ask, is the proposal considered a purchase request? I have

canceled the order and I think I am in the right. I will not pay.

You can't have canceled an order on eBay, since it's not possible to do so without the seller's consent.

The purchase offer is binding and you can see whether it has been accepted or not in your order summary.

If you don't pay, you'll be reported as a non-paying user; the first warning has no effect, but from the next one (warning) you'll have increasing difficulty buying on eBay.
