VAT added to sale in Italy
Good evening,
Today, after making a purchase and paying, I noticed that the total was 11 euros higher than the amount shown on the payment page.
Looking at the breakdown of the various costs, under VAT these extra 11 euros had indeed appeared.
This additional charge was not mentioned anywhere in the seller’s listing, nor was it communicated by ebay itself before I paid.
The seller had Italy listed both as their location and as the place from which they would ship the item.
This left me puzzled, since usually, unless you buy from sellers outside the European Union, VAT is already included in the price, or so I had understood.
In any case, this is the first time that, buying on ebay, something like this has happened to me.
That said, I’d like to hear your opinions on this, whether all of this is simply something that can happen from time to time or whether it’s a calculation error on ebay’s part and I was charged VAT twice.
Thank you for your time and have a nice day.

Mentore1 year agoThere may be some cases:
The first is undeclared dropshipping; the seller is Italian, but the item is shipped from a non-EU country.
The second is a seller based in an Italian customs-exempt territory; there are a couple of postcodes in the provinces of Varese and Como.
The third is typical of building materials, where the VAT rate depends on the buyer. Here the price is VAT excluded and if you don't qualify for any concessions (first home or renovation), the standard VAT is then applied.
