Hello, I have been buying on eBay for years from time to time, but I had never experienced suddenly seeing a total amount due increased by VAT. In short: three days ago I won a used hard drive at auction from a seller. When I paid, I found the amount was almost 30% higher. I still made the payment out of respect for the seller; then I spoke with eBay support, who told me that it is a "digital good" and subject to tax payment (I believe with the UK as beneficiary). I should point out that the listing made absolutely no mention of paying additional taxes of which I had not been informed. Moreover, the hard drive (which is a physical item and not digital) does not seem to me to fall within the list of goods indicated on the HMRC website. Reading the information on the "eBay customer service" website, it clearly says that any additional taxes must be indicated in the listing. It seems to me that I have been charged an undue tax, and I would like to know how to file a complaint against eBay.
P.S. why should the English state get richer from transactions involving used goods that took place in Italy?

Mentore1 year agoThe EU imposes the payment of VAT (and any customs duties) on all products that enter the EU customs territory.
Whether the item is physical or digital, new or used, you always have to pay.

OP1 year agoSorry, but maybe I wasn’t clear: The seller, like me, is Italian, and the goods were shipped from an Italian country and arrived in an Italian country and did not go through any customs.

eBay has nothing to do with it, you simply should have noticed the location where the item was located or the seller’s registration status.
Based on that, you should have known that VAT would have to be paid.
eBay just applied a legal regulation.

OP1 year agoThanks for the response, but maybe it wasn’t clear in my explanation: both I, the buyer, and the seller are Italian, and the goods were shipped and arrived in Italy.
