I’ve been coding for 20 years, but I’ve never seen APIs this absolute garbage
Let’s be honest: eBay’s developer ecosystem is an absolute, Kafkaesque joke.
I’ve been writing code for 20 years, but I have never in my life encountered such a convoluted, hostile, and mind-bogglingly broken authentication architecture. For the past three days, working alongside an AI assistant, I haven't even been able to get through the basic setup just to make a single simple API call.
Here is a brief summary of the absolute nightmare you call an onboarding process:
The
.comvs..itFlip-Flop Loop: You force European developers onto a global.comdeveloper portal where our local marketplace accounts (like.it) instantly trigger authentication loops, redirect errors, and password rejections. It’s a closed-loop trap. The "Account Deletion" Exemption Maze: To get a production keyset unlocked, we have to bypass obscure marketplace deletion settings just to build a local, standalone application.
The Two-Hour Token Circus: Generating and refreshing tokens feels like solving a Rubik's cube blindfolded in a dark room.
Meanwhile, look at modern financial infrastructure—crypto exchanges and payment gateways handle billions of dollars in volume every single second with clean, elegant API keys, straightforward documentation, and tokens that actually work without requiring a degree in dark arts.
At this rate, to make your API system even more useless, why don't you implement a single-transaction token that forces us to regenerate credentials every 3 minutes? That would at least match the sheer absurdity of the current user experience.
Whoever designed this absolute abortion of an API system should be fired on the spot. But let's be real: instead of being fired, they're probably hailed as a genius, making a fortune in bonuses and stock options.
Seriously, if anyone knows this person, I want their photo. I genuinely want to see their face—maybe I'll print it out and hang it in the bathroom.
P.S. Please make sure to write this on their office door: "Complicazioni cose facili" (Complicating simple things).
