Ebay store, professional seller, and VAT number
Good evening everyone,
I’d like to start selling some products, buying them to resell, so we’re not talking about used items. To do this, do I need to switch to a professional seller account, open an eBay shop, and open a VAT number? Do I have to do all 3 things obligatorily?
I’m talking about a tiny number of items (maximum 10 listings), for a short and defined period of time (about two months a year).
The products in question are in the home, furnishings, and DIY category.
Obviously, on the earnings I’ll make I’ll have to pay taxes; to do that, do I absolutely have to open a VAT number, even though the monthly profit I think won’t even reach a couple hundred euros, or are there other ways to pay taxes, stay compliant with the law and the tax authorities, but without having to open a VAT number?
I hope some experienced eBayers can reply, helping me and clearing up the doubts I have.
thanks to those who will arm themselves with patience to reply and help me.

Mentore3 years agoGood morning,
a second opinion does not differ from the one already given: the very phrase "selling products, where I buy them to resell them" makes you a merchant, so if you want to sell and stay on the safe side you need to get compliant and, as already said, open a VAT number FIRST, THEN register with the chamber of commerce and THEN you can organize your sales.
Kind regards.

I’m asking specifically whether a VAT number was mandatory, because last year I asked my accountant what I asked you, and he told me that I don’t have to open a VAT number if I have very low earnings or anyway low ones, under 1000 euros.
That’s why I was asking you, because I thought that if in those 2 months when I would sell products, with low earnings, I wouldn’t need a VAT number.
Thanks anyway for the answers.

Mentore3 years agoIf you do it to make some money and in an organized way using a marketplace, you're a merchant.
A merchant, before starting, must open a VAT number, etc.... then obviously he must use a professional account where on every listing he publishes his VAT number.
The professional seller is responsible for the compliance of what he sells, including all the rights he must guarantee (by law) to his buyers: returns for change of mind, legal warranty, etc.....)

OP3 years agoOk,
But are there ways to pay the taxes on my purchases without having to open a VAT number?

Mentore3 years agoIn case it's to be able to pay taxes on the earnings from your sales.
Anyway, the answer is no. You have to choose whether to get compliant or act like an illegal seller, with all the risks that this entails.

OP3 years agoPerfect, thanks, it was useful.
I'll wait and hope for the same, other opinions and different or agreeing advice with what you told me, from other eBay users.
