Automatic offer
Good morning
I took part in two online auctions (items from the same seller). I had set up two automatic bids, but I was still connected at the time they ended and I was very surprised by what happened. In one case, the simpler one, the eBay bidding history shows that there were only two bids (both automatic), mine and that of another bidder. For my bid I had set a maximum of xx,xx euro. Until one second before the end I was winning as the sole bidder. Suddenly the system reports that my bid had been outbid (which is not surprising) and the auction was closed without giving me the chance to bid again (this seems very strange). The same thing happened in the second case as well, except that there were three automatic bids instead of two: an automatic winning bid that beats mine, which appears in the last second with the auction being immediately closed by the system. I should point out that in both cases the winner seems to be the same. Probably I am the one misunderstanding eBay's rules, but I can't understand why there was no chance to bid again, which among other things causes financial damage both to the seller and to eBay itself. Can anyone explain the mystery? Thanks everyone

OP3 years agoI knew about the existence of BOTs for automatic offers, but what surprised me was the auction being brutally "closed" at the deadline. In the world of auctions, normally it only ends when there are no more bids. Here, instead, it seems that everything closes at the deadline. eBay can set whatever rules it considers most appropriate, but I’m surprised that a seller would accept them so willingly: with the bid blocking I don’t see any advantage for him, only the possibility of losing money, which, at least in the case I described, happened. For my part, I’m left disappointed at having lost without even being able to try to compete for the items. As far as I’m concerned, eBay remains a very interesting platform for "Buy It Now," but I’m done with its online auctions.

Mentore3 years agoThe way auctions work on eBay is very clear: auctions have a date and a time of ending clearly shown in every auction... whether there are bids or not...

I think the answer to your question is already included among the words you wrote in your conversation: "Until one second before the deadline "... it’s obvious that you no longer had time to bid again.
I also remember that there are automatic bots (external to eBay) that place bids automatically even without human presence...
