Item delivered to a different address than the one requested - new scam by sellers on eBay
After hundreds or maybe thousands of transactions with eBay, both as a buyer and as a seller, I’ve run into the latest frontier of the scammer “seller”: Item delivered to a person and address different from the one requested.
How is that possible? Basically, the “professional” seller provides an SDA tracking code for an item sold to another person; in my case, it was even an Amazon shipment!
This kind of code doesn’t show either the name or the address of the recipient, who in fact is another person in another city who unknowingly bought a completely different item. The tracking code only shows the departure and arrival of the item purchased by the other person, and then the (their) package is delivered to them.
When a dispute is opened for item not received, the only thing the dazed eBay support does is check the tracking code, without verifying either the recipient’s name or the delivery address, and siding with the dishonest seller.

OP3 years agoAfter almost two months I received a letter from the bank (banca Sella) informing me of their findings on the matter and the CREDITING of the money stolen by the scammer.
So let me sum up how the characters in this saga come out:
1) ME: after two months, after filing a report, after doing the investigator’s job and getting the shipping tracking documents the Italian way (by talking to the SDA manager), I finally got my money back for the item I never received. Voila!
2) The scammer seller: the CRIMINAL complaint remains, handled by the carabinieri. The complaint is CRIMINAL because there can’t have been any mistake.
3) eBay: now that I’ve recovered the money, I’ll see how to proceed with a report against eBay, since they didn’t follow the law and didn’t follow any common-sense rule. All they had to do was ask their “TOP” seller for the shipment tracking. Which they never did. With them I lost the dispute and then the appeal. Brain-dead.
4) Paypal: totally useless. After I think about fifteen years I’ll stop using all their services completely. It was nice, in the past. Adios.
5) Poste Italiane: basically pathetic. Thanks to a mix of stupidity/incompetence they made the scam possible.
6) SDA: same as above, except when you manage to talk to someone who uses their brain, and not the usual backstabbers.
7) The bank: the only one that actually did its job. It wasn’t that hard. Anyway THANK YOU!
😎 At least I didn’t have to hand the case over to legal, which would have been the next step if I hadn’t been reimbursed. In twenty years, and with dozens of fraud attempts thwarted in various ways, I had never had to struggle so much to assert my rights and not be robbed. World... thief!

OP3 years agoeBay customer support said that the only thing that matters to them is the tracking code, which says that the item was delivered. Yes: I bought a razor and instead a chest of drawers was delivered to another user, in another municipality. It would seem like a joke about eBay customer support, but unfortunately it’s all true. What a bunch of clowns!
So, for the first time in my life, I went to the Carabinieri, and I filed a fraud report against the seller. The Carabinieri, to whom I provided all the details I had already gathered, found the story quite interesting... I hope there will be developments.
In the next few days I’ll try to figure out what kind of action I can take against eBay for failure to supervise, and for not complying with the regulations that would require them to do at least a minimum of checks.
Even SDA’s call center is pathetic: after the usual robots, the various human operators basically tell you everything over the phone (the item shipped, the city where it was delivered, etc.). But when I ask for a statement (an email) confirming that the item was NOT shipped to me: well, they can’t do that because of privacy issues. Why? Isn’t it obvious? The item was not shipped to me!

Mentore3 years agoThis issue makes no sense at all... all SDA tracking has the date, time, municipality and place of delivery, and in most cases also the signature.
So it is absolutely not true that eBay only cares about the tracking... it’s very simple... if the address you gave the seller does not match the delivery municipality, eBay has always provided assistance in these cases.
Also, how do you know it’s an Amazon delivery?
Something doesn’t add up... probably some information has been left out...
Kind regards.

OP3 years agoI confirm that THIS type of tracking, used I believe only by a certain type of professional sellers, does NOT show either the recipient or the delivery location.
For this reason I was relying on eBay support, which however proved completely useless.
From the initial checks following the report to the Carabinieri, it emerged that with regard to the appliance I purchased, the seller provided the tracking code of an EXTRALARGE package weighing 37 kilos sent to a large company.

OP3 years agoThe scam mechanism is based on the fact that the tracking display only reports that the item was delivered. Period.
At the moment I call SDA, get through the various robots, and finally speak with the HUMAN operator, this last one gives me a lot more shipment details - for example, the fact that it was an Amazon shipment weighing 37 kilos and not a hair clipper (!). Too bad, though, that the operator does not want or cannot put these things in writing.
Beyond the obvious inability of these people to carry out any action... they can speak, but probably are not able to write a sentence in Italian... the SDA operator immediately sees that I am not the recipient of the parcel, and based on that cannot provide written details regarding a shipment that is not addressed to me.

Mentore3 years agoHave you appealed the eBay decision, as I advised you?
In the appeal, you need to specify the inconsistency between your address and the one where the package was delivered.

OP3 years agoI appealed to eBay, attaching the complaint I filed with the Carabinieri for fraud.
The appeal was rejected because eBay referred to the tracking code (not the recipient’s name, much less the recipient’s address): the code only proves that the item was delivered.
Today I took the documentation to the bank, since I paid with a credit card. At the bank, just like at the Carabinieri station, they were very surprised by eBay’s behavior, which failed to carry out the control duty required by law.
Meanwhile, from the Carabinieri’s investigation it emerged that, in connection with my purchase of a small household appliance, the seller provided the tracking code for an EXTRALARGE parcel weighing 37 kilos. Another gem for the diligence with which eBay handled the matter.

Mentore3 years agoContact eBay customer support, try to explain what happened, specifying the discrepancy between the addresses (especially the fact that the delivery was made in a different city). With the operator, ask to be able to appeal against eBay's decision.
