item not received yet, the courier says they tried to deliver it twice but it absolutely didn’t

I bought an item that comes from Australia, the maximum delivery time is December 1st (Monday) the courier says that they tried twice to deliver it but that's absolutely not true. I called Poste Italiane and they tell me that my item is probably being held at the post office and that I should go pick it up....is this normal???

If the postman (or the courier) certifies that he hasn't found you twice, you have to go pick up the package at the courier's branch that has it for delivery (if the post office has it, check carefully whether it's with the post office or SDA, since the branches are different).

If you don't pick it up, you risk losing both your money and the item.
