Package in France that has not been picked up

I sold a rather expensive vintage chandelier to a Frenchman. Normally I only sell in Italy but, given the somewhat "difficult" item and the buyer's apparent courtesy, I decided to try selling abroad. I shipped it with Poste Italiane through eBay's shipping service and for 2 days the package has been in France but the buyer is never home to collect it.
I'm afraid this person will never collect it and I had the doubt even before shipping because, after a thousand messages about problems that prevented payment (because I had to change the selling settings), the user never showed up again.
I would like to understand what will happen at this point if he actually doesn't collect it and doesn't reply to my messages. Is there a risk that, being around for so long, the chandelier will get damaged and I would then find myself having to issue a refund, losing the eBay fee and maybe even the item (which eBay has already paid me for).
This user has plenty of positive reviews (apart from 2 that say he doesn't pay, but it's 2 out of 150) and I don't understand what he gains from spending 220 Euro on something he doesn't want.
To finish: in these cases what do you do? Do I have to wait for the item to come back and put on a brave face, losing everything?
