I received a return request for a pair of items (car parts, major brand, high value) from a UK user who, claiming that one of the two had a leak, thought it best on his own initiative to cut them open (they're metal, you need an angle grinder), open them up, and then ask me to reimburse him for the cost of the repair (welding and closing them back up). He attached photos of them, cut and opened, in the return request. Leaving aside the fact that it is now not even possible to determine whether they are the same ones I sold, since there are no longer any elements to compare them with what they were originally, in my opinion he should have filed the return request BEFORE cutting them open. As far as I'm concerned, they could even be another pair, or even the pair he had mounted on his car and is now trying to pass off to me as a return or partial refund. I did not agree to pay a single thing, but I did accept the return. It is obvious that the items I will receive are the ones that were cut open. Leaving aside the fact that I imagine eBay will refund him anyway, how can I protect myself and appeal this refund in a second instance? I will receive a pair of items that are no longer worth anything at all, if not an unwieldy and heavy paperweight for the desk.
