Hello everyone, I have been both a buyer and a private seller on eBay for about 20 years (seller level consistently above standard). I have rarely needed help to resolve a dispute. To my great disappointment, today I realized that eBay no longer offers any support to sellers; in fact, the system is aimed against them. Let me explain.The dispute-handling procedure is deliberately made impossible to use (see below***), and the staff you interact with are probably instructed to close the matter in the buyer’s favor no matter what, even if the buyer is blatantly lying or worse, carrying out a scam. You constantly feel like you’re being blackmailed: "either do this, or the buyer keeps the goods and the money". For me it is clear that eBay wants to shift the costs of buyers’ mistakes onto sellers. I’m realistic, this is understandable and even acceptable as long as these “mistakes” are made in good faith and not on purpose to harm the seller or worse, scam them! This is the crux of the issue: it is my impression that eBay no longer makes any effort to distinguish between these two cases. To be clear, I do not expect eBay to act as a judge in legal matters, but if the platform, through its staff, does not collect clear evidence of what the buyer claims, the seller has no way to protect themselves legally. I’ll repeat the point: for me the problem is not that eBay resolves disputes in favor of the buyer even when it does not seem “fair” from the point of view of Italian law; the problem is that it does not ask for proof of what the buyer states. This documentation should be made available to the seller so they can protect themselves in the appropriate venues, from a complaint in the event of fraud to legal action for actual damages. (***) The error is not temporary. It is not possible to reply directly to eBay staff; to submit an appeal you have to search through the help pages, otherwise the link does NOT appear on the dedicated page in the seller console! The staff do not get into the merits of the issue and brush everything off superficially.
