SCAMMED BY A BUYER, EBAY DOESN'T CARE.
On May 20, a buyer from Lithuania with zero feedback and a profile created 10 days earlier “buys” my Nintendo Switch. First of all, I’m not some top seller, but I’ve still been on Ebay for 4 years and I have photos, a seller profile, and 15 positive reviews at 100%. Once the package arrives, he decides to dispute it, saying that inside there wasn’t the Switch but a “Corsair charger” (?), basically a broken piece of computer junk, and that “the courier must have mixed things up and swapped the contents of the package.” He then attaches 3 nonsensical photos as “proof”: a photo of the package still sealed seen from above, and 2 photos of this PC part, which was probably some scrap he had at home. 3 photos that mean nothing. The buyer insists on sending me back this piece + the refund. In short, he wants to get the console for free, AND HE SUCCEEDS. I contact Ebay customer service, and the first time, an Albanian lady tells me he has no proof, that everything is fine, and that “I just have to wait.” I think, okay, if she says so, I’ll wait. After 4 days I get a notification from Ebay, if I don’t immediately accept the return they will investigate. At this point I call support again, a guy, also Albanian, answers, bouncing me around and saying that it’s a .com problem and I need to contact them and not .it. so he “passes the case” to .com, which sends me an email in English, where basically I’m told to accept the return so I can resell the item and not lose “anything,” ignoring the fact that the buyer wants to send me back some PC junk and not my Switch. I don’t accept the return and report the person to the platform with the appropriate reasons. I repeat, from Lithuania, randomly generated name, zero feedback and profile created on
10 May. Meanwhile the person no longer contacts me; the only message they sent me was the initial one, namely “ Hi, I hope I're doing well. I received the shippment today but I received what appears to be a Corsair power supply instead. I’ve attached photos of the box and the power supply for your reference. Can we please sort this out? I assume there was a mix up in the shipping. Could you either send me the correct item or process a full refund? I'm happy to send back the power supply if you can provide a prepaid shipping label. I hope to hear from you soon and hopefully we can work this out”. A rather ambiguous message, by the way. Moral of the story; Ebay sides with the scammer, refunds him, and I end up losing 177 euros and with nothing in return, frustration through the roof, I appeal but nothing changes, they reply with a message that looks copy-pasted saying I had time to accept the return. Now I’m wondering, is it really this easy for a buyer to SCAM on Ebay? Isn’t there even the slightest protection for the seller, not even when the scam is OBVIOUS. I’m speechless.

Mentore2 years agoIn distance selling, nowadays all transactions happen through credit cards, PayPal or equivalents. So, if you run into a dishonest buyer, there’s no escape.
The only alternative is an ad with in-person exchange and cash payment.
