Xbox Series X sold for parts, buyer takes it apart and asks for a refund, how should one handle it?
Summary: stehug-6098 is discussing an Xbox Series X sold for parts. A buyer took the console apart and is now asking for a refund. stehug-6098 is looking for advice on how to handle the situation.
Good evening everyone,
for a few days now I’ve been dealing with a dispute with a buyer who opened a return request for a Xbox Series X I sold.
The buyer bought the console in the category "For parts or not working". In the description I had clearly written that the console was in excellent cosmetic condition but not working, that it showed no signs of life, that it was missing accessories, and that it was part of a lot of computer equipment. In addition, I had noted that the warranty sticker had already been removed and reapplied, a sign that the console had already been opened in the past.
After receiving the console, the buyer left me positive feedback, simply writing "Ok". After a few days, however, he opened a dispute for "parts or pieces missing", saying that the hard drive is missing from inside the console and asking for a refund because without it it’s worth nothing.
I pointed out to him that:
- The console was sold as not working and for parts, so it could also have been incomplete.
- The warranty seal had been removed and reapplied, so it had already been opened before I sold it.
- I never mentioned the hard drive in the specifications because I couldn’t test it and I never opened the console before the sale.
- It was part of a lot of computer equipment, so I had no information about the internal condition.
He replied that the console, as soon as it was received, was taken to a repair shop, where it was completely disassembled in an attempt to repair it (I also have a photo).
Only at that point did they discover that the hard drive was missing. I tried to make him understand that by taking it apart he altered the condition of the item, but he insists on a full refund. I also offered a partial refund of 20 euros, but he won’t hear of it.
It seems to me that I described everything clearly in the listing and that it wouldn’t be right to accept the return, since the buyer disassembled the console after receiving it.
As far as I know, eBay does not accept returns for items modified by the buyer, so the console is no longer in its original condition.
I haven’t contacted support yet because, honestly, I’ve read many stories of disputes always being closed in the buyer’s favor and I’m afraid eBay might force me to accept the return even though the buyer disassembled the item.
Do you think I have a chance of winning the dispute? Has anyone had similar experiences with eBay?
Thanks to anyone who can give me some advice.

Mentore1 year agoGood morning,
if you have all the messages in the eBay chat, contact support and explain the problem to them clearly, you have a good chance of winning the dispute.
Kind regards.

I contacted eBay support and they also told me I had a good chance of winning the dispute. They also told me to wait for them to step in.
Sure enough, the next day they stepped in and closed the dispute in my favor and released the payment.
