Buyer with PayPal - Seller with bank transfer
Good evening everyone,
I’ve been a user for many years, I’ve mainly bought and occasionally sold as a private seller. Now I find myself needing to sell an item after about 10 years, things have changed and I have a few doubts.
I wanted to ask: is it not possible to set in the listing that the accepted payment is bank transfer?
Does it happen that the buyer pays with PayPal automatically and then eBay transfers the money to my bank account? If so, who pays the PayPal fees?
Another question: while I’m creating the listing, isn’t there a way to keep track of the costs I’m incurring by creating the listing and activating the various selling options? I remember that once the costs of the various options were shown next to each option...
Thanks everyone!

OP3 years agoWow, I didn’t think it would spark this much debate.
Just to be clear, I’m a private seller and can’t really be described as a seller, with just a little over 40 sales in 20 years. I’ve always used eBay to buy and only very occasionally to resell; there were years, long ago now, when I racked up most of my feedback as a user in a short time, then I eased off. I still buy from time to time, but nowadays I prefer other places for my purchases; eBay only comes back into play if I find a lower price, or more rarely if it seems to be the only alternative for finding products that otherwise can’t be found, used and old products; no longer commercially available.
Now someone was talking about “going back to selling” in reference to my questions. In reality that’s a bit of an overstatement because this time too it’s a fairly occasional need, as it has always been.
As for what was discussed, I’ve never been a fanboy of anything, neither eBay nor especially PayPal, also because, I repeat, my point of view has always been 98% that of a buyer. In fact, I’ve frowned on both the first and the second in those few occasions when I was the one selling; bluntly (and cheekily) I’ll say that whenever money was supposed to come in rather than go out, I’ve always found both sets of fees high, but I think I can be understood since, I repeat, I’m a registered buyer and an occasional seller; if I made selling my business, I think it would be easier to focus on the benefits rather than the obligations.
As a buyer, though, eBay was my introduction to e-commerce and I certainly owe to it my familiarity with online shopping, well before many others who only in recent years have seen the internet as a business opportunity, something now taken for granted and normal. I was basically a kid, and yet I got savvy quickly, buying (and occasionally selling) even on the other side of the world.
PayPal, on the other hand, was the end of all my troubles. I was one of those who used to queue at the post office 20 years ago to pay a woman in Germany through Moneygram... That’s what it was about 20 years ago. And you really had to be willing! The arrival of PP was a revolution and it’s what made me truly cosmopolitan from a business point of view.
Now, my opinion of the current situation is that, as far as I understand, this new structure of the platform is rather discouraging for someone with my needs, namely those of a perfect “nobody” who wants to sell something to someone once in a blue moon, but the answer is already contained in the previous statement; namely the need for the platform to build itself around sellers who are “somebody”, not “nobody”, that is, to promote a trustworthy e-market as safe as possible for buyers and competitive with other well-known realities today.
That doesn’t mean, though, as someone else had already pointed out, that one couldn’t think of something better that doesn’t discourage the presence of small and occasional sellers and, indeed, could encourage them or at least help them grow bigger and maybe, why not, see eBay as an opportunity again. But perhaps, by the law of large numbers, this isn’t profitable, and that’s as true as it is not true at all at the same time; a matter of philosophy.
Anyway, just today I completed the sale that led me to start this discussion, I’m waiting for the payment, or rather, I’m waiting for eBay to notify me that the buyer has made the payment 😄
I’ll let you know how it went once this new experience is over
Thanks to everyone who chimed in

This is a reminder that the Forum is a place where users help each other, and discussions must take place with respect for others' opinions. Please keep the tone civil.
Thank you for your cooperation.

·3 years agoSomeone had asked for advice on getting back to selling on ebay, and all of us gave some based on our different personal experiences. Obviously, the advice was different and just as obviously, different scenarios were described (ranging from the idyllic to the apocalyptic).
I think seeing the same problem from different points of view is something to appreciate.
However, I believe it is right to express your own opinion without necessarily tearing down someone else’s.
This is also just a form of respect toward the person who asked the question. He isn’t interested in all these extra squabbles between us.

OP3 years agoOK, I get it
I don't know what to say, on the one hand I understand, on the other I feel like giving up😅
Thank you very much for the quick replies!

·3 years agoIf you consider that before you had a Paypal account linked to a bank account (so an IBAN) and that under €100 you paid for the transfer done manually... now you no longer have Paypal... you only have the IBAN and all transfers are free and automatic (even for a few cents)... I'd say that's a clear improvement... but many Paypal nostalgics will say that's not true!
Kind regards.

·3 years agoI apologize for butting in... but I don't think it's appropriate to describe as nostalgic those who, when they could, preferred PayPal. I don't find the assessments precise in the points indicated, namely:
1) It is absolutely not necessary to link a bank account on PayPal; any credit card is enough (in about 18 years of PayPal I was never forced to link an account even to transfer funds to the account).
2) on PayPal all paid transfers (that is, those sent to the card instead of the account) have a maximum cap of 10 euros, happy to pay it since PayPal advances the money in a nanosecond without making the recipient wait, nothing like eBay where sometimes it can take a month to see a credit (unless there are hiccups). Forget your personal experience (as a professional seller), just as I am not talking about mine (as a private seller) since I stopped selling, but the countless experiences of others on the Forum count at least as much as ours. It's not a matter of nostalgia but of practicality.
Instead, to Mr @brizio84 I want to say that since 2021 it has no longer been possible to link a PayPal account to eBay; only accounts linked previously remain linked. And in any case, it would be a good idea to update yourself before selling because once you join you can't go back, and by selling you automatically declare that you know and accept all the conditions.
As for wanting to give up, I can understand it, but everyone has to think with their own head, for their own needs, hobbies or whatever else. There is no absolute truth, only whether or not one adapts to the conditions imposed.
Kind regards to all

·3 years agoGood morning morgana,
in fact I was waiting for someone who would seize on my sentence to start an argument...
What I said was only and exclusively based on what the writer wrote: "Then moving the funds from PayPal to the bank account how much would it cost me?"
I also know very well that with PayPal it wasn't necessary to have a bank account... that payments were credited immediately... and blah blah... but sometimes it would be better to grasp the "single" meaning of the request, without making pointless arguments... and it would be appropriate for those who have stopped selling to make room for those who are still selling to share their experiences with these new payment systems (private or professional, whatever they may be...)... not just from having read about it and to think about how it works.
People keep having such a huge fear of the "IBAN"... stay up to date... read... okay, fair enough, but you only really know how things are when you use them... someone said "try it to believe it" and from my experience I can say that it's better now, for several pointless reasons to mention because it would just start another pointless argument.
Anyway, I know... having met you here on the forum... that I have already started a new argument... and now I bet you’ll reply: "but who knows you?"
Kind regards.

·3 years agoAbsolutely RIGHT actar80
The problem that you ULTRAS of paypal never mention is that in case of a return, paypal does not refund the fees.
Ebay refunds the fees, paypal does not.
So if a buyer asks me to cancel a sale, I have to cancel it and ebay must continue to guarantee the refund of the fees.
With paypal this was no longer possible.

·3 years agoI am not an eBay fan but I am a private eBay seller with about 150 items for sale who has taken on all the RISKS for listing items with the new contractual clauses.
He also took on the risk of any tax audits for the credits received from eBay that are not reported in the tax return.
Where most private users have run away, I have stayed in the game despite the worsening economic crisis that has exponentially increased the risk of scams.
Then if someone wants that on the eBay forum I should be put on the same level as the ex eBay sellers disappointed with a chip on their shoulder, let me know and I will adapt, it is certainly not my intention to upset and/or offend anyone, heaven forbid.
Kind regards.

·3 years agoI agree with you, but those were other times; today with PayPal I don’t even sell a pin anymore, because here too a VAT number is required, which a private individual doesn’t have, and the request sooner or later arrives as per the terms and conditions. Outside of here, I only use bank transfer, safe and approved by the tax agency. A real private individual has nothing to hide and if I were lucky enough to exceed the allowed sales threshold I would be very happy to pay taxes on it. To heck with the suspicious types!
actar80
·3 years agoWell, I only made 1 sale with PayPal last year through another platform, not much, I think that for small amounts sporadically there isn't really this much of a problem, up to almost around 2,800 euros you don't have to declare anything (I don't remember the exact figure but it's very close to this).
morgana10
·3 years agoFor sure, it’s like you say! However, I didn’t even think about the issue; I stopped much earlier, I no longer have the patience to dig out the catches, and I stopped at "what you can do with a personal account" https://www.paypal.com/it/webapps/mpp/ua/useragreement-full?locale.x=it_IT#opening-account:~:text=Con%20un%20conto%20personale%2C%20%C3%A8%20possibile%20inviare%20e%20richiedere%20denaro%20ad%20amici%20e%20familiari%20e%20pagare%20acquisti%20online

·3 years agoeBay will pay you by SEPA bank transfer, but first you need to associate the IBAN with your seller account, otherwise you’ll never see the money. Also, as a non-regular seller, keep in mind that in any case your funds will be blocked for at least 14 days.
With the new system for crediting amounts to sellers, you’ll have to front all shipping costs and, if the buyer wins a claim, front the amount for the return label cost and for the purchase refund.
As for the last question, I wouldn’t be able to tell you; I don’t remember, since I hadn’t added paid options when I was selling. You should go to eBay’s fee pages and read the cost amounts.
actar80
·3 years agoPS: I forgot to mention, as they already told you, bank transfer no longer exists, the seller can no longer set anything up and only needs to link an IBAN and complete its verification procedure. Whatever payment method the buyer uses after that is no longer relevant. It will be eBay that, through its own bank transfer, will later pass the funds on to the seller.
brizio84
OP3 years agoThanks a lot to you too for the kind reply.
Basically, I think I understand implicitly that if I have to make this sale right now, it would be best for me to also link a PayPal account so that the buyer who pays with it deals directly with my PayPal account, right?
But in this case, besides eBay's 5%, will the credit be further reduced by PayPal fees, or are those included in that 5% anyway since everything happens within eBay?
Then how much would it cost me to move the funds from PayPal to the bank account?
Sorry for the newbie questions, I haven't created a listing in 10 years and in 20 years I've probably made 40 sales, if that...
marioelegio
·3 years agoNo, payments are always handled by eBay. Whoever pays with PayPal pays eBay, and then eBay, after deducting the fees, transfers the funds to the current account you have linked to your account (if you are a new or infrequent user, as a precaution they hold them for 15 days).
There is no point in linking a PayPal account to your eBay account.
The total fee for private sellers (for EU sales) is 5% plus a fixed 35 cents and is independent of the payment methods used by the buyer.

sika700
·3 years agoNo... it doesn’t work like that anymore.
Now you have to update your eBay account with an IBAN from a bank account or a prepaid credit card ... eBay will handle the payments, basically the buyer will pay eBay using the method they prefer (PayPal included) and then eBay will deposit the proceeds into your bank account.
Read here how it works now:
Receiving payments for sold items | eBay
Remember that as a new seller (after 10 years you’ll still be considered one...) you’ll be subject to precautionary holds on your funds; basically eBay keeps them for at least 15 days until you’ve made enough sales to be considered reliable.
Read this too:

Best regards.

·3 years agoPlease, they already wrote it to you but I’ll repeat it: the Pappalardo account can no longer be used to sell on eBay, just as bank transfers can no longer be requested.
The seller must link their bank account or card with IBAN to the eBay account. Then the buyer will pay eBay with PayPal, credit card, etc., which will then pay you.
But be careful: as discussed by others in another post, once an IBAN is linked it cannot be deleted, only replaced with a new one. See the post here:
https://community.ebay.it/t5/Strumenti-per-la-vendita/Attenzione-a-collegare-il-conto-corrente/m-p/943443#M5350
I think that for just one sale it’s better to use another channel; if then you decide to keep selling, it might make sense to start understanding the new rules.

YES
No one, the 5% also includes PayPal.
Unfortunately I don't understand what you're asking. The fees are these: https://www.ebay.it/help/selling/fees-credits-invoices/tariffe-per-venditori-privati?id=4822&st=3&pos=1&query=Tariffe%20per%20venditori%20privati&intent=tariffe&lucenceai=lucenceai&docId=HELP1456#section3

OP3 years agoThank you for your reply!
Regarding eBay fees, I read about them, but I was wondering whether, while I’m setting up the listing, there was a way to summarize the costs for me, meaning how much I’m spending to create the sales listing.
Many years ago, next to the various options to enable or not, it said how much it would cost extra to use that particular solution, Buy It Now, reserve price, etc...
sika700
·3 years agoThe fee you pay is shown at the end of the guided listing creation.
