Postman1: the postman doesn’t ring the intercom, doesn’t leave any notices, and leaves the package on top of the mailbox
Recently I had a problem with a parcel marked as "delivered" by Poste Italiane’s tracking service but never arrived at its destination. After going around the local post offices (the parcel had left a sorting center near me) I finally managed to speak with a manager of said sorting center who told me:
With Posta1 the postal worker is required to bring the envelope or parcel all the way to the destination. If the parcel in question does not fit in the mailbox, it is simply left "on top" or near it.
-The postal worker is not required to notify the recipient, even if they had to leave it outside the mailbox
-Leaving notices of failed delivery and taking the parcel to the local post office is not contemplated
-For Poste, the fact that the postal worker left the parcel, even outside the mailbox, at the mercy of anyone who happens to walk by, means that for them they did their job.
-Until some time ago, Poste left collection notices and took charge of parcels not delivered to the recipient because they could not be notified or if the item did not fit inside the mailbox, but now this service has been cut by Posta1 for cost reasons.
Now, I wonder whether what this person said is true. Personally I find it absurd that for Poste, leaving a parcel on public ground, outside a mailbox, counts as delivery. If, then, notifying the user (or at least trying... ) is not even among the postal worker’s duties, then I wonder what the success rate is for any item bigger than an envelope or a magazine...

OP3 years agoAs a buyer, I don’t choose anything. Often the shipping method isn’t even indicated in listings. When I sell (here or elsewhere), I’m the first one who always makes sure to choose the most suitable shipping method for the type of item. And anyway, it’s happened to me sometimes, when I shipped with the Post Office, that the clerk on duty would warn me if the item was too bulky or heavy, or would advise me against using a certain shipping type for the kind of parcel I was sending. If Poste1 is just a simple rebranding of the old priority mail, then the same rules apply, which means certain types of parcels (too thick or heavy) should not be accepted. And all the others should be delivered safely to the recipient.

You choose the seller and therefore you choose the type of shipping they offer, sometimes even more than one, all visible in the "Shipping and payments" section of each listing, but almost no one pays attention and pays for the first and cheapest shipping offered, without even making sure which one it is.
It’s obvious, if the seller offers express courier and ships with Posta 1, I’d be upset too.

OP3 years agoConsidering that my mailbox is one of those "standard" apartment-building ones, where even a couple of bulky magazines can fit quite easily through the slot, it seems unlikely, according to what you’re saying, that the seller tried to send me a parcel by regular mail. So whose fault is it then if not the postal service’s? From now on will I have to send Ebay sellers a photo, complete with measurements in mm, of my mailbox, if I want the package not to be left outside?

·3 years agoSorry, but it's the fault of whoever chooses to have it sent with Posta 1...
It is enough to choose, or have it sent by registered mail or other types of parcels... anything but Posta 1 or 4.

Posta 1 is an old priority mail service; in addition, it only has delivery confirmation.
All the "old" services remain in force anyway: registered mail and traceable parcels.

"Packages" are something else; they can be tracked and require the recipient's signature

If I buy on ebay I never choose Posta1 and even less Posta4, unless it's items of very little value and size (e.g. postcards, tickets, magazines, etc.). If I want to be sure I receive what I bought I ask the seller for at least shipping with Registered Mail, even in the case of Piego di Libri (one of the purchases I make most often).

there are several shipping methods, if you chose the one that does not include delivery notice, as the postal worker described to you exactly, I don't think you can complain to anyone.
Otherwise, registered mail requires that they ring your doorbell or leave you the notice, but not for Posta 1.
