I need to send a package weighing about one kg, small in size, to Hong Kong.
It contains a collectible camera lens sold for €1400. How do you recommend I ship it? What should I be careful about?

Looking back, once I had checked, although with a tiny bit of uncertainty, the buyer’s reliability, what worried me most was customs clearance for the lens, but I have to say that with the information and forms provided by eBay everything went smoothly!

·2 years ago.... that's phase 2...... which ends depending on the type of payment made by the buyer, so :
180 days from payment if made with Paypal
about 13 months if made with a credit card ( possible chargeback )

·2 years agoone of the most useful things I found while following the community...... updating the Treccani .... among other things I noticed that several users I already had in my "encyclopedia" before ( including .... see previous reply....) have posted here'....... evidently some "unlucky" people feel the need to share their personal ( and subjective...... ) experiences......

OP2 years agoHello everyone! Here’s an update on how my transaction went.
I shipped with Poste Crono Internazionale, insuring the contents.
The courier who picked up the parcel at home decided not to take the free export declaration that eBay had told me to print out.
When the parcel arrived at Malpensa, I was contacted by customs staff who asked me to send it to them in PDF. Said and done. Two days later it arrived in Hong Kong where it passed customs checks and was delivered this morning.
In the days between departure and shipment, I stayed in touch by message with the buyer, who
today confirmed that he received the lens in excellent condition, left positive feedback and the money is already available, they should credit it to me tomorrow!

I should add that you were lucky to find all that speed and helpfulness from the customs of Poste Italiane.
Maybe during the summer period they have fewer shipments to handle.

·2 years agoI hope everything goes as well as possible..... but I wouldn't have sent 1400 euros to Hong Kong, not even insured with FedEx. At a glance, it smells like a scam from miles away (though I hope I'm wrong and that the buyer is serious)

·2 years agoBajonzo’s last words were reassuring, to most, about the buyer’s reliability. It seems it’s a collector. Which suggests that ‘our guy’ has already packed up the lens and shipped everything to Hong Kong.
The buyer’s nationality remains uncertain. I hope it’s not the sadly notorious Chin Chan Cè-Chàpel Chel Ghè, known to Interpol as a very skillful ebayer. But rather another kind of collector.
Let’s send our best wishes, hoping the next post clears up any doubt and doesn’t have tragic consequences. Always remembering the old and esteemed saying: In business and in war, there’s more bullshit than dirt 😁

·2 years agoWith just 5 items sold, you barely start to understand the basic principles of NATIONAL shipping.
An international shipment involves a whole range of knowledge that can’t be unpacked in a few forum posts.
In any case, the things to do are
- pack the item well
- rely on a serious and reliable courier that offers signed pickup and shipping insurance without too many restrictions.
- and then include all the necessary customs documentation.

Poste Italiane or something else?
The transaction will be made with PayPal, what risks do I run as a seller? The goods sold are perfect.

·2 years agoThese days it’s necessary to be meticulous and as non-generic as possible. For shipping, I’d confidently go with Poste Italia’s delivery international, but only after I’d built a nice custom package to fit sturdy cardboard, all stuffed with bubble wrap and foam inside so the zoom is held still, protected on every side, and before closing I’d reinforce it again with cardboard scraps on the edges and top. But then I’d say to myself: wait a minute! Who am I sending this item to? A British buyer who bought it from me, or a Chinese buyer? Because since 1997 Hong Kong has ceased to be a British protectorate; now it’s all China. And besides long delivery times, China is not exactly a place where things go the way you might imagine as a seller. Find out well about the destination. A collectible camera lens? In China, of all places? Contact the buyer and tell them what prompted them to buy your piece. In English. See what they say. If anything doesn’t convince you, don’t ship it and ask ebay for support on the best way to handle the refund.

OP2 years agoIn the end I chose the shipping handled by eBay, which is basically Poste Italiane. The user is a collector, I also found them on Instagram, and they seem like a trustworthy person.

·2 years agoI imagine you chose the only available option, namely the international crono handled by EMS.
For the modest sum of 38.25 euros.
Let’s say that for a 1400-euro target, it would have been better to go with a much more serious and reliable international courier that handled the whole shipment in-house with a single tracking code, such as DHL, UPS, FeDex
If you make mistakes with the customs paperwork, don’t expect to be contacted directly by email or phone by an operator (as DHL, UPS, FeDex does).

·2 years agoin the meantime the replies from the other users have arrived.... the considerations, all in my opinion valid, each made also on the basis of personal experience....
personally, for years now, I've become "allergic" to shipping outside the EU ( and, in some cases, even within the EU ....... ) items that exceed a certain value: so, in my case, this problem wouldn't even have come up ....
anyway, in short:
take care with the packaging, so it's "courier"-proof ( ... just to give one example, not infrequently small parcels are "launched" the way the quarterback does in an American football game.... ) ;
use a reliable courier for international shipments ( the names have already been mentioned in the other replies.... ) and, obviously, prepare the customs paperwork correctly.....
then it's also right to "understand" who the buyer is, by asking "targeted" questions: obviously though this doesn't protect you from any later problems...... in the end it's still an unknown person ....
