Hello everyone! I’d like some advice on shipping from you more experienced folks.
I need to ship some items (collectible cards) that I sold here on ebay. Clicking on the print label option takes me to a page where I have to enter a whole series of information including the package weight, length, width, and height. After that, a series of couriers appears to choose from: I’d like the "poste standard" option because they have the option to drop off the package at the branch without home pickup, which often isn’t available...
I was wondering a few things:
1) the full protection option (160 euros) who provides it? poste or is it an ebay/packlink service? And does it really work in case my item is lost (recent collectible cards). I wouldn’t want to spend more for a useless service like with the insurance from various couriers
2) in the case of poste there’s the very convenient option that printing the label on the package is NOT required...does that mean I can go straight to poste, show the QR, and they take care of putting the label on for me?
3) generally do you have any advice for shipping as a beginner? I’d gladly accept them 🙂
Thanks

OP1 year agoOkay thanks....tomorrow I'll let you know
As for Poste Delivery, do you know if you can also use the classic yellow padded envelopes that are sometimes used for registered mail, or is a rigid container necessarily required?
heavenwelkin
·1 year agoYou can ship with a padded envelope, but one that (if possible) isn't too small because the courier might lose it....
Anyway, the quality of the service offered by UPS or DHL (also as regards the care taken in handling parcels) is not comparable to the couriers of Poste Italiane.
If you need to ship more delicate goods or something valuable, for 2 or 3 euros more choose these couriers.
UPS does not ask to inspect the contents of parcels.
pokecard_93
OP1 year agoYes, in the end I handed over the already packed parcel and the DHL people didn’t say anything... also because it would have been absurd otherwise, since packing it properly would have taken me quite a while...
For DHL the only problem is that on eBay shipping it only gave me the home pickup option... I’m not always at home and even less all day, since they don’t tell you the time of day they’ll arrive...
pokecard_93
OP1 year agoWell ok, I'll seal it like I've always done with post office. This thing about them looking inside packages really doesn't excite me...

·1 year agoI can confirm that DHL ( sometimes ) does it, especially if the shipment is going abroad: in particular they do it to check whether prohibited and/or considered dangerous materials are being shipped...... anyway, personally, I’ve never had any problems.....

OP1 year agoWhy does eBay shipping highlighted clearly tell me this:
Print the label.
Hand it to the courier when they come to pick up the shipment.
We remind you to leave the shipment open so its contents can be checked at the time of pickup
So I don't know....won't it make me reopen everything later? It seems like I even have to hand the label to him and wait to put it on?
heavenwelkin
·1 year agoUsually they just take the package and don't make a fuss if they find it already sealed.
Then sometimes they get back in the van and you can see them waiting for the time needed to do their check, other times they do the check at the depot when they return.
Sometimes I've brought tape and scissors with me, shown the contents, and then I sealed the package back up myself.
Otherwise they take care of it themselves.
So do it however you want, but rest assured that if you hand them the package sealed, they won't say anything and won't refuse the pickup.
pokecard_93
OP1 year agoAlso on the eBay Packlink site it says that for home parcel delivery I have to keep the package open and close it in front of the courier... but is that really how it works? To me it seems like an unrealistic thing.. I've never heard of anyone doing that, especially since couriers are always in a hurry... they’re not going to wait for me to finish packing it, are they??
What should I do in your opinion? Thanks
heavenwelkin
·1 year agoIt depends on the courier, sometimes you can hand them over already packed and with the label on, other times they want to verify the contents but if they're in a hurry they don't waste time checking and packing everything up.
This is a safety measure that ONLY DHL does to verify that fake goods or dangerous or prohibited items aren't being shipped.
Deliver the package sealed; at worst, they'll open it at the DHL sorting hub in the area.

OP1 year agoUpdate: I got the DHL label as suggested....I saw that it's possible to print the label in two formats and, opening the PDF for printing, I see that there are actually two pages...
1) If I understood correctly, the first one is to be stuck on the package...while the second is to be given to the courier by hand, right?
2) On that note, will the courier give me some document that confirms receipt of the package? On eBay I read about making two copies and keeping one for yourself and having the courier sign the other...is that really how it's done?
3) since my package is 16 x 16 x16 can I reduce the size of the page to attach or do I risk the barcode not being read?
Thanks

·1 year agoGood evening pokecard_93
1) The shipping option with home pickup is available; you can choose home pickup or delivery to a post office or a post point (cheaper). Check carefully and select the corresponding option.
2) Personally I’ve never tried it as an option, but a forum user said it’s enough to have the label with the QR code or barcode on your smartphone and the operator can print something to attach to the parcel (I don’t know if it’s the full label).
If that’s the case, let us know more details about this shipping method without the label on the parcel.
3) Based on the item’s value, with a minimal difference of a few euros, you can choose a more reliable courier like UPS or DHL, maybe without the insurance option. For items of low value (under 100 euros), in my opinion the cheapest shipping you find on eBay is perfectly fine, the standard one without insurance.
For 160 euros of value, I’d rather choose UPS or DHL with 75 euros of insurance included, but without adding the insurance option so you save a few bucks.
But these are just my personal thoughts; it’s not a rule, it’s just what I would do.
Best regards

OP1 year agoThanks for the replies! If I chose UPS or DHL, how would I ship it? Because I’m never at home and Fermopoint places like tobacconists or random shops don’t feel safe to me at all....are there UPS or DHL centers where you can drop off the parcel?
Why does only the home pickup option appear for these choices...
Thanks
pokecard_93
OP1 year agowhy on eBay do UPS and DHL shipping only let me choose home pickup and not a depot/their office
heavenwelkin
·1 year agoI only just got online.......
I can confirm that UPS and DHL, for shipments within Italy, only offer home pickup.
For international shipping, UPS also has delivery to a pickup point (not sure about DHL).
For Poste Italiane and BRT, though, you can choose either home pickup or delivery to a Poste or BRT pickup point.
