Hello.
Sorry for the pointless question, but even though I’ve looked into it, I have to say I don’t exactly understand what these import charges refer to.
I want to buy an item from the UK, the price is 155 pounds, shipping 15 and import charges 38. Now, when I receive it, I’ll have to pay customs duties and VAT on the total: aren’t these already the import charges? As I understand it, these are the package handling fees, but they end up increasing the price on which I’ll then have to pay customs duties and VAT..... But what handling are we talking about? These charges, if I’m not mistaken, aren’t paid if, for example, I buy the same product from a normal ecommerce site, they only give me the product price and shipping, not import.
In short, what are these 38 euros for?
Sorry for the long explanation, but I’d like to understand once and for all.

·1 year agoThere's not much to clarify:
to import "something" you always and anyway have to pay customs taxes, which are broken down into:
- VAT (on the total including shipping)
- Duty (if the amount above exceeds 150 Euro)
- Customs Charges (that is, the customs clearance fees of the carrier used for the import).
That's it.
If you pay VAT in advance at checkout and then pay it again on delivery, you can get it refunded by sending eBay the receipt issued by the carrier.
Note that this applies ONLY to VAT (or VAT if you prefer...): Duties and Charges are NOT refundable, also because they are applied locally and therefore cannot be paid in advance by the tax withholding agent.

·1 year agoSince the item plus shipping exceeds 150 euros, the collection of customs fees is not handled by eBay, but by the courier.
If it is shown in the listing, it means the seller is using the GSP service. That is, these fees are calculated and paid in advance.
Read the listing carefully and you’ll find all the information (the ones I put in light blue italics you should also find on your listing): This item will be shipped through eBay's International Shipping Program. Includes international shipping code, simplified customs clearance and no additional charges upon delivery.
If you pay for one of these purchases via PayPal, you’ll see two separate payments to two different entities. The international shipping costs and import charges are paid to Pitney Bowes Inc.
The 38 GBP include duties, VAT and the courier's fees. You shouldn't have to pay anything else on delivery.
This amount includes applicable costs for customs fees, taxes, brokerage and other charges.
But since 37.4 is just VAT, some doubt is reasonable.

OP1 year agoIn the listing, though, the rest of the phrase doesn’t appear "simplified customs clearance and no additional cost upon delivery".
So the 38 GBP (45 euros) also include VAT. But isn’t it calculated on the sum including the customs duty? And doesn’t the duty also depend on size and weight? How do they know that in advance? Can we say it’s an estimate?
I was calculating (making an estimate of the duty) a total VAT of 54 euros, so I couldn’t understand that figure.
Anyway, if I don’t have to pay additional VAT on the full amount, much better.

OP1 year agoI can’t edit the message anymore, so I’m adding it below.
From the eBay page https://www.ebay.it/help/buying/shipping-delivery/changing-delivery-address-method/international-purchases-shipping?id=4057#section2 I read that these are the charges involved.
And it’s misleading to write that they also concern VAT and customs duties since those are separate. But anyway, 38 euros for bureaucratic fees that, if I’m not mistaken, I repeat, outside of eBay are not of this amount. I hope someone can clarify this for me. Thanks.
