Estimated import costs from the UK
Good morning,
I received an offer for an item at 103.99 GBP + 12.80 GBP shipping (international program), and an estimate of import charges of 24.31 GBP.
When proceeding to the summary, the estimate of import charges rises to 53.43 GBP.
What should I expect the final payment price to be after accepting the offer? Aren’t duties supposed to be reserved for amounts above 135 GBP or 150€ ?
Thanks in advance,
GF

·2 years agoCustoms duties in the EU are due for amounts over 150 euros.
When importing from the UK, British citizens are required to pay customs duties for amounts over 135 GBP.
Your total is 103.99+14.35=118.34 GBP, using the same exchange rate they used to convert 103.99 into 122.90 (1.1818) we get 139.86 €. So you are in the duty-free range.
At 139.86 you have to add VAT of 30,77 euros and that alone already shows you that the first estimate was wrong (what was predicted would not have been enough to pay VAT alone). The difference in the second estimate (between the total and the various payments) is the charges that Pitney Bowes pockets for handling customs formalities and for paying the VAT to the Italian state.
203.01 - (139.86+30.77) = 32.38 €
This shows that although it is convenient, the GSP program is definitely expensive.

Customs duties range from 0 to 20% of the value of the goods; the customs rate depends on the type of goods. VAT must be calculated on the value of the goods + shipping costs (22%).
Best case scenario, you’ll only pay VAT; worst case scenario, 22% VAT + 20% duty.
