request for money after some info from a seller

    Good evening everyone

I’ve been a buyer since 2012 and for the first time something unusual happened to me. I bought a product to carry out a job on my car. This product didn’t work 100%. At this point, I contact another seller who had a similar product and ask him whether his would do the job 100%, and he tells me yes. Then he starts looking into it to ask me what wasn’t working, and message by message I explain the situation to him. He gives me some advice, I try again, and the first product (the one bought not from him) works 100%. Then he presents me with the bill: an amount that, according to him, is fair, because if he had done it personally he would have charged double. I was left stunned (although I would have happily offered him a coffee/breakfast), but without any warning or a price list relating to the problems solved  I find this kind of situation a bit excessive.... what do you recommend ?

    Thanks in advance

    as Mario said, it’s entirely up to you; in this case the seller can’t claim anything afterwards. Let’s say he gave you advice “at his own expense”; it’s his mistake if he expected payment;

what makes me think, though, is the fact that the item “wasn’t working” and then, with the right suggestion, it works: why wasn’t the actual seller contacted eventually (it isn’t indicated in the post)? And, given eBay’s rules, would you have opened a dispute afterward for a non-working item (despite the fact that, with the proper adjustments, it worked)?

Good evening and thanks to everyone for the very clear and also very friendly replies 🤣......

in fact, the help from the seller of the part did happen, but not completely enough to get the sold component working; actually it was enough to change a simple setting that I wasn't aware of.

Anyway, even though he didn't accept a return, he took the component back and will refund me as soon as he receives the material.

I had started the discussion with the above-mentioned "seller" to get information about the material he was offering, since it was very similar to what I had bought from the first seller. From there, the questions started, which I answered ... honestly I found his excessive interest a bit strange. I had also told him that as soon as I got the refund, I would buy what I needed from him. When he led me to the solution, I felt like offering him a couple of "hearty" breakfasts, but when he gave me that little price, it left me stunned and completely killed the idea,

I'm also sorry because he has the material I would need in 2 different types and since one of the 2 is more convenient for me to use I wanted to ask him if it worked like the other ....... but I'll let it go..... 🤣 otherwise he'd ask me for double.

On reflection, I have a YouTube channel with few subscribers but during the week I receive quite a lot of messages asking for all kinds of advice, which I reply to, losing my personal time .... if I did what he does I'd make half a salary every month......😂

    Anyway, thanks everyone

I'm sorry too because he has the material I need in 2 different types and since one of the 2 is more convenient for me to use I wanted to ask him whether it worked like the other one ....... but I'll pass..... 🤣 otherwise he'll ask me double.

thanks to you for the reply / clarification

PS: .....actually there are people who started a profession by "selling" advice ....

    have a good weekend

His advice was not owed to you since you didn’t buy from him, but it was his choice to help you and he shouldn’t have had the ulterior motive of payment, which isn’t expected in these cases on eBay.

In any case, he should have asked for a contribution before helping you, but since he didn’t sell you anything on eBay, he can’t demand anything.

It’s also true that he spent time explaining things to you, so it’s up to you whether to offer him something, but it’s your generosity, not an obligation.

If, on the other hand, you felt bad because he didn’t warn you beforehand that he wanted something in return, tell him you can’t pay him because your notebook is full of debts to the community! 😂🤣Obviously I’m joking! 😁

If you think his phone advice was worth something to you, pay him. Otherwise ignore it.

There can’t be price lists for this kind of situation, not on eBay..... otherwise we’d make a fortune here on the forum.
