"Pickup in the area" and the seller doesn't respond
Hello, I bought an item on July 27 via PayPal. It was right after the transaction that I noticed it is set to “pickup locally” as the delivery method. So I contact the seller to ask for clarification, but he doesn’t reply. I try to cancel the purchase and Ebay tells me this can be done on July 31. Today, checking the status, Ebay still tells me it’s not possible to cancel the transaction because the seller has already shipped it (shipped when and where to whom? tracking numbers? nothing of the sort). I try to start Ebay’s resolution process: it says the seller still hasn’t uploaded the shipping details. Of course I also try on PayPal to see if I can do anything, but to proceed I have to prove that I contacted the seller (done) and the item’s delivery date (there’s nothing anywhere). Result: he doesn’t reply and I can’t do anything.
If some kind soul can reassure me that I simply have to wait, or if I can do something else to get out of this situation, I would be very happy. Thanks for your attention.
P.S.: I had already told myself twice “Never Ebay again!”. And well, third time’s the charm 🙂

Thank you very much for the prompt reply. Now I will wait calmly, aware that in the end I used PayPal on eBay.
The seller with 100% positive feedback
I don't think there's any bad faith, but it's unpleasant when you don't receive a reply or assistance.

·3 years agoI also don't think the seller is acting in bad faith; simply, it could be that they want to sell with local pickup but without having to deal with eBay bureaucracy, QR codes, and electronic payments, but this kind of sale on eBay is no longer allowed because it has been regulated.
If the seller wants to sell this way, they have to go on Subito or other marketplaces where these practices are allowed.
You followed the correct purchase procedure by paying with a payment method allowed by eBay; it is the seller who very likely hoped not to pay the sales fees and not to have any kind of post-sale responsibility, and maybe that's why they didn't want to follow the required procedure.
Best regards.

·3 years agoThe problem is not ebay, the problem is any inexperienced sellers who put up auctions without knowing anything about how the platform and its procedures work, and then they don't know how to manage them because they are faced with a series of mechanisms they don't know.
If it had been an experienced seller, he would have behaved differently, but if you're an inexperienced seller and you find yourself faced with a series of things you don't expect, don't understand, and don't know how to handle, you simply panic, don't reply to emails, and make mistakes.
Evidently he panicked because he must have seen that the money had arrived for him (maybe he was expecting to receive it at the time of hand delivery), minus the fees and probably also blocked, so it could be that he didn't want to complete the pickup because he saw a series of procedures unknown to him.
Of course these are just hypotheses, but with buyer protection I don't see the point of faking a shipment without tracking.
I don't think it's a scam, but just the seller's inexperience.
So all you can do is be patient, wait for the delivery estimate to expire, and then open a dispute for item not received.
P.s. next time, if it's a handoff in person, contact the seller first to make sure they know the whole procedure with the qr code and accept electronic payment, because many times it happens that sellers think/believe (or want) that it's like on subito where you exchange phone numbers, set an appointment, and do the exchange on the spot.
Best regards.

·3 years agofirst off, if someone DOESN’T read the rules (at least the basic parts....) and, I’ll add, the listings, then you shouldn’t be surprised when these situations happen.....
anyway, in short :
the cancellation can only be done by the seller at their discretion;
the seller CANNOT have shipped it (since it’s local pickup, unless there was a second option that, indeed, included shipping) ;
then, not to drag on with a series of possibilities that vary depending on what you did afterward, it depends on which procedure you may have opened ( PayPal? )

·3 years agoYou are the one who has to go to the seller and pick it up locally. The seller made that very clear in the listing and doesn't want to waste time; you should have read what was written in the listing before making the purchase.
You can't cancel the purchase and neither can ebay. The seller is the only one who could, but they are under no obligation to cancel the transaction.
You could only wait for the delivery period to expire and ask for a refund through ebay (but I fear that opening the PayPal dispute has made things much more complicated). Contact ebay customer support.
Now you just have to hope that the seller actually shipped the goods to you (I doubt it).

OP3 years agoI haven’t started any procedure yet at the moment, other than canceling the transaction.

·3 years agoYou had written it differently......
Anyway, the only thing you absolutely couldn’t do as a buyer was....
If you haven’t opened the PayPal procedure, you can request a refund through eBay with ....... https://www.ebay.it/help/buying/returns-items-not-received-refunds-buyers/ottieni-aiuto-per-un-oggetto-che-non-arrivato?id=4042&st=7&po=1&uci=0&ri=0
I don’t agree with Heavenwelkin’s theory of the inexperienced seller; in my opinion the seller knows the procedures well and could use this to their advantage (even improperly) against you.

·3 years agoYes, exactly, it's just a theoretical guess of mine, nothing more.
Not having the seller's profile available, we can only assume it was either an inexperienced person or an expert who, having seen a new user, wants to take advantage..... but in that case I find it very hard that he'd succeed.
For sure the buyer doesn't know eBay's procedures and, "understandably," panicked.
For sure, if the buyer paid with PayPal, somehow it'll work out.
