I made a bid by mistake; I thought it was a Buy It Now, but it was an auction...
It’s one of the first times I’ve used E-Bay and I’m not very familiar with it.
I contacted the seller within 12 hours of the bid, asking him to cancel it, and he replied that he can’t and that there won’t be any problems if I don’t pay; he’ll relist the item.
The auction didn’t get any other bids besides mine. How do I avoid paying?
Why can’t I see the price of his item in his listing, updated to my bid?

·3 years agoGood morning, since you don’t have much experience, let me explain that first of all, as a rule, a request to cancel a purchase must be made within 1 hour via the appropriate option, which is precisely visible in the purchase menu for up to 60 minutes after the listing ends. After that, you can request it from the seller by contacting them, but in either case they are not obliged to cancel the sale since the seller loses the fixed fee amount in any case through no fault of their own.
Then whether you clicked on 1 listing in Buy It Now format or made 1 bid on 1 auction listing doesn’t change much; in the latter case, the sale is completed when the auction ends. If you made the first bid or 1 bid higher than the others and later there were no more from other buyers, the auction ends and you have won the item, with the related obligation to pay for it.
You can also choose not to proceed with payment if the seller does not cancel the purchase; for the first time the system will count it as a missed payment and maybe the first warning. Be aware that in the event of other future unpaid purchases, in addition to the warning, restrictions will be placed on the account, and if continuous unpaid purchases should occur, it will lead to suspension and/or closure of the account.
Purchases on eBay are equivalent to accepting the contractual terms that we all signed in order to be able to register on the platform and are intended to combat harmful behavior (wasting time and money) both toward sellers and buyers. So you need to be sure you want to buy before making 1 bid or clicking Buy It Now.
I hope that now you have a clearer picture of things.
One thing I didn’t understand: you say you don’t see the amount of your bid in the listing. Are you sure you’re looking at the listing for the item you bought? The seller may have put 1 other identical item up for sale, or may have canceled your bid without contacting you. To make sure, go to "My eBay" and then scroll through the menu and click on "Purchase history"; here you can see the purchases you actually completed.

Regarding the quoted text, I don't see anything anymore now because it ended up with me not paying and the seller canceling the order.
Maybe it's as you said, he put the item up for sale in a second listing and I was looking at that one, even though it seems strange to me because I used the email link.
Is it possible that my bid, being the first, matched the auction's starting price? Or does the first bid also add €1 to the starting price?
I know it sounds strange, but I don't remember how much I bid anymore, it was a low-value item and a week has passed...

·3 years agoIf you don't pay for the listing, it should remain for a while in your purchase history and show as unpaid, and every so often you would receive an email from eBay inviting you to pay. I assume the seller canceled the sale on their own initiative; it is within their rights after 4 days of not receiving payment, so you no longer see the listing in your purchase history.
But I strongly recommend trying to avoid other purchases that you then won't complete with payment for the reasons I already explained in my previous reply.
That said, regarding auction bids, I can confirm that even the first bid can be higher than the starting price; I experienced it myself some time ago: if an auction starts at 5 euros and you bid directly 7 euros, so as to have a better chance of not being outbid right away, the first bid automatically becomes 7 euros and it's as if you had not made any other bids. It is better instead to make the first bid 5 euros (starting price) and then make other higher bids to stay ahead of other users; the first bid of 5 euros will remain in effect and if there are no other bids from other users the auction will end at 5 even if you have made other bids of 6, 7 euros, etc.

I’ve never taken part in an auction on E-bay, I thought the bid didn’t need to be confirmed and that the money would be deducted automatically.

If it was your intention to buy it at that price with Buy It Now, what changes now in an auction where you were the only bidder?
Anyway, it seems obvious to me that to avoid paying, all you have to do is not go through with the payment, ignoring the automatic eBay messages that remind you that you have to pay for the item.
