·7 months agoHello everyone and happy holidays,
I'm buying a set of Digimon cards from Japan for a total cost of €45.71 with free shipping and VAT included, as eBay says at checkout: is it correct to apply a 35% additional cost (combining VAT and customs duties)?
Thanks everyone
heavenwelkin
·7 months agoHi litfedeba
35% more on 45.71 euros is a reasonable estimate; if you end up paying less, all the better.
Keep in mind that in addition to the 22% VAT cost, there would be collection fees charged by the courier to handle the customs paperwork and collect the money, which depending on the courier range from about 5 euros to 15 euros.
Best regards.
marioelegio
·7 months agoUp to 150 euros, VAT is collected by ebay and there are no customs duties.
If the courier should, by mistake, ask you again for VAT, with the receipt for the VAT paid to the courier you can ask for a refund of the amount paid to ebay …. https://www.ebay.it/help/buying/paying-items/pagare-le-imposte-sugli-acquisti-ebay?id=4771#section6
hi

·7 months agoAs the good marioelegio rightly points out, you should already have paid the VAT to eBay; check the order details. So when the seller fills out the customs declaration, they must specify this detail about the VAT already collected by eBay.
That’s all.
If everything is done correctly, you shouldn’t have to pay anything when the item is received, since there wouldn’t be any collection fees charged by the courier for the customs process.
But it could happen that something doesn’t go as it should and, when the package arrives, you might be charged an additional amount.
The IMPORTANT thing is to NOT REFUSE the package and to pay what is due.
If it’s Italian Post, make sure you don’t give cash to the postman, because he wouldn’t issue any receipt and therefore there would be no proof of double payment to show eBay.
If that happens, say you don’t have cash and that you’ll go pick up the package at the post office; if needed, pay by card and ask for a receipt.
If it’s a courier asking for cash, pay by credit card and ask whether they can issue you some proof of payment.
Best regards

Hello, I’d like to buy this item that is located in Japan. Besides the 67 euros, will I pay about 25%, so around 16 euros, for a total of 83 euros? And that’s it?
heavenwelkin
·10 months agoIt depends on which courier will handle collecting the payment.
Depending on the courier, for the collection service they may ask you anywhere from 2 or 3 euros up to 15 euros.
So on top of the 16 euros, you should expect to pay an extra 2 or 3 euros up to about 15 euros.

·1 year agohi saw94808
If you read the replies above yours you can see that there is:
22% VAT
I don’t know exactly how much the duty is, but I’ll quote:
"Duties on musical instruments imported into Italy can vary depending on the type of instrument and the country of origin. They are generally between 0% and 20% of the instrument’s value"
Then the shipping costs also have to be included in the taxation (which in your case are free)
Then the costs charged by the courier for handling the customs paperwork and collecting the payment.

Today the seller made me an offer and I should pay 91,54 euros (VAT already included)
Could you tell me how much I would have to pay in fees?
Thanks a lot
heavenwelkin
·1 year agoHi jeki_315
On 91,54 euros you have to pay
4% on 91,54 = 3,66 euros (theoretically no customs duty is paid under 150 euros, but sometimes they make you pay it, so include it just in case; if they don’t calculate it, even better)
22% on 91,54 = 20,13 euros (22% VAT when the item enters Italian customs)
courier fees = between 5 and 20 euros (these are the costs the courier charges for handling the payment, collecting the payment and then passing it on to the state).
So if you’re LUCKY you pay about 30 euros, if you’re unlucky you could end up paying around 45 euros.
Kind regards

·1 year agoOn the total you pay, you need to calculate:
22% VAT
You shouldn't have to pay customs duty, but you never know (calculate 4~6%)
Then the carrier fees for collecting the money, which can be 5 euros or 15 euros (depending on the courier).
So on your 68-euro purchase, you'll end up paying between 20 euros and 35 euros.
You decide whether it's worth it.

thanks
marioelegio
·1 year agoFor the exact customs duty you need to consult this site ..... https://aidaonline7.adm.gov.it/nsitaricinternet/
Generally, at least 30% of the total cost paid per item and shipping is considered
If you think of an average customs duty of 4%, VAT at 22% and the courier charges for advancing the costs and for customs assistance.....
4% on 470 = 19 euro
22% on 489= 108 euro
charges = between 10 and 20 euro
Total= 19+108+20 = 147 euro
Which is 31.3% of the total

·2 years agoHello, I'm writing again because I'm interested in an item from Japan this time from Ebay. At the time of payment there is the message:"VAT added to prices based on the shipping address. No additional customs fees will be applied." Does that mean that on delivery I won't pay anything, neither VAT nor customs charges? I managed to find the untaxed price and applied 22% VAT to it, and it gave me exactly the amount without shipping costs.

·2 years agoGood morning ayzaf25
It depends a lot on the seller, on how they fill out all the necessary customs documentation.
You can ask the seller to attach to the customs documentation (print out) also the page relating to the "order details" where it is shown that ebay has already collected the VAT.
Tell them to highlight with a highlighter or with a red mark the part relating to the VAT already collected by ebay because sometimes whoever checks it might not notice.
By doing so there is a good chance that when the package arrives you won't be asked for any additional import costs.
Kind regards.
ayzaf25
·2 years agoHi. So, for customs charges I’ve always dealt with the postal service. So I’ve always paid 5 euros in postal fees, also because I almost never buy stuff over 150 euros. In the end, as you said, FedEx charges you 10 euros more but has a better service
heavenwelkin
·2 years agoThere’s no comparison....
FedEx shipping is fast, tracking is detailed, and customs clearance usually takes a few hours, not weeks....
With FedEx you know exactly where the package is and, if there are any problems, you have support that sorts them out.
ayzaf25
·2 years agoThanks a lot. Wow, it practically costs me more than the merchandise without shipping. Next time I won't rely on them anymore
heavenwelkin
·2 years agoIf I remember correctly, UPS or dhl also ask for at least 10 euros.
FeDex, if there are any problems, calls you on the phone or by email and the customs clearance procedures are quick and the staff is competent.
Also, you can make an advance payment of the import fees so that when the courier arrives you don’t have to pay anything at the time of delivery.
If you’ve never dealt with the customs of poste italiane, for example, where when a package arrives nobody contacts you and you have to wait even 1 month before the package is cleared.
If you try to contact poste, nobody sheds any light on it or can give you references on what to do and how to go about it.
Also, poste italiane charges fees called "postal rights" which are 5 euros for amounts from 22 to 150 euros of package value.
Best regards.

·2 years agoFor purchases from outside the EU, VAT is always paid, whether the items are new or used.

·2 years agoI’d also like to make a purchase from Japan; it’s a leather jacket with a total value of 152,50$ (at the exchange rate, 147,28€). In the listing, under shipping and payment/taxes, it says:
The indicated price includes VAT. The final cost may vary based on the specified delivery address.
Likewise, in the payment form, once the method is chosen, the note says:
VAT added to prices based on the delivery address. No additional customs fees will be applied.
So the amount I pay on eBay (147,28€) is final, right? Or at least, it already includes VAT but not any duties/courier charges to be paid later upon delivery?
heavenwelkin
·2 years agoYou can't be certain that after paying the 22% VAT on eBay, nothing else will be due.
If that's the case, be ready to pay something more, by that I mean another 4 or 5% on the total value of the item (item cost + shipping cost).
But it's not certain, it could be fine like that without having to pay anything else when the item is received.

·2 years agoIf you are in Italy and need to buy and therefore import an item, for example from Canada, to protect yourself you will certainly pay electronically (PayPal or credit card or anything derived from it).
In the case of a sale between private individuals without a marketplace acting as intermediary, the seller must provide proof of payment, which must correspond to what is declared in the appropriate form where the type of item, weight, value, etc. are written.
If no proof of payment is attached (bank transfer, credit card, PayPal, etc.), the package will not be cleared through customs.
Generally, customs, if they find packages with insufficient / missing documentation, does one of these two things:
1) Contacts the sender and asks them to attach the missing documentation.
2) Without mincing words, returns the package to the sender, who loses the shipping cost.
Best regards.

So if I were to spend more than 150 from Japan, the calculation would be: 151 x 22% VAT + 151 x 4% for the duty (plus courier fees)?

Annamaria
annamariabrudaglia
·2 years agoI'm asking because I'm interested in buying some music CDs and a video game, and both were only released in Japan and I would have to go over €151 in value, so I just wanted to know whether the duty is calculated this way (if I have to pay it).
Thank you so much in advance
marioelegio
·2 years agoThe customs duty is calculated based on the value of the goods, including shipping costs as well.
You should check the Taric register, but for many goods there is no longer any duty from Japan.
As for import VAT, it is calculated on the whole amount, that is, the value of the product, shipping costs, and customs duty. The rate is the usual 22%.
So if the duty is 4% and the total value is €151.....
then 151*1.04 = 157.04 then 157.04 * 1.22 = 191.59
To this amount you need to add between 5 and 20 euros in customs fees (depending on the courier).

·7 months agoUsually you pay VAT and any duties on the total cost (including shipping costs).
If the seller offers free shipping, you simply calculate VAT and any duties on the total cost including shipping costs, which in your case are free.

There are things to consider before buying because if you do it just to save a few euros, in my opinion the savings are not worth the risk of running into a series of possible problems.

An example can be some fashion dolls I collect: if in Japan a doll costs 25000yen, about €135 at the current exchange rate, adding shipping around €20 and customs around €30 you still stay under €200, but in Italy the same doll is sold for €250 by some retailers, so it’s not convenient. The value of the goods exceeds 150 euros, so you will also have to pay the duty.
If the seller does not add any further shipping costs, this is the calculation (based on the current amount of 627 euros):
22% VAT: 138 euros
4% duty (calculated based on the product category in the table I’ve attached): 25 euros
Customs charges (I’m being conservative and using FedEx as the carrier, since it’s the most expensive). 18 euros
Total 627+138+25+18=808 euros

·3 years agoQuestion: but if at the time of payment VAT is added (our IVA, I’d say), to the final price of about 150 euros do I still have to add 22% VAT or just customs duties? Thanks

·3 years agoIt depends on who you pay them to: if you pay them to the Italian state, that’s fine; otherwise you’ll have to pay them again.
On listings where the courier collects them in advance, it clearly says:
Shipping:
