As a seller, I have to cover refunds with my own money
Good evening,
as per the title, if I have to refund a buyer because they cancelled a purchase and I don't have the funds because nothing was credited to me, do I have to refund them out of my own pocket?
I'm talking about a refund of 290 euros!
and if, for justified reasons, they cancel the sale several times after the buyer has paid, do I have to pay out 290 euros each time?
please tell me I'm wrong!
Thanks, Andrea

·3 years agoGood evening Andrea
The seller who has already received payment for an item IS NOT OBLIGED TO CANCEL AN ORDER where, among other things, they would pay out of their own pocket a commission of 0.35 euro for the payment reversal costs.
Any refund is at the seller's DISCRETION.
If you decide to refund the buyer, you have to advance the money yourself (ebay will withdraw it from your bank account); after 15 to 30 days the blocked funds will be unblocked and credited to your account.
All this procedure ultimately leaves you with a negative balance of - 0.35 euro in your account.
Kind regards.

·3 years agoYou knew it earlier too, since in order to sell you declared that you had read and accepted ebay's terms of service.

OP3 years agoRight Mario,
I admit my ignorance, which got lost in the labyrinths of those who perhaps want to squeeze everything out of everyone over something they “sell” as within everyone’s reach, when that’s not the case.
I was missing someone to beat me up over it.
Well done

·3 years agoEbay can't know in advance the level of preparation and aptitude for learning, and the willingness to learn, of a user who decides to try their hand at online selling.
Ebay gives you a tool that certainly takes time to understand.
But it is up to each user's awareness to understand whether it makes sense (as a "NEW SELLER" or "OLD SELLER WHO STARTED SELLING AGAIN after a long time") to start directly with an expensive item or start with small items to get some practice.
When a user with zero feedback lists a PlayStation 5 for 700 euros, they run a rather high risk of being scammed (because of inexperience).
Lately Ebay in some cases has significantly reduced the basic selling limits (3000 euros or 150 auctions per month) for newly registered users. This, in my opinion, for various reasons that I can list among the ones that come to mind off the top of my head....
- to understand whether the user signed up to kill time or did so in a serious, aware, and conscientious way.
- to prevent a new inexperienced user from getting burned with expensive items and becoming a victim of scams or fraud by more experienced buyers.
- to prevent an inexperienced user from being unable to manage sales (due to inexperience)
- to ensure a certain level of safety and satisfaction for buyers on the platform.
In conclusion, selling on Ebay in 2023 is certainly doable for a private individual, but it is much more complex than it was 10 years ago.
And this is not true only for Ebay but for all those marketplaces where the payment method used is a credit card and/or tools that rely on the credit card (see paypal).
Kind regards.

OP3 years agoGood evening guys,
Ok I think I understood that I should have read all the rules and fine print of how to sell on eBay but maybe you're missing the fact that we're talking about a platform that was born and I can say with confidence dies with the buying and selling of trinkets, leftover stock, old junk and last but not least cheap Chinese tat! Talking about it as if it were the most important thing in life seems exaggerated to me, it will always be a passing experience it's sad to think that someone could spend the rest of their life in this environment! Best wishes to everyone

·3 years agoProbably you're also missing that ebay is used by people who do it professionally... some people work on ebay... anyway, it doesn't seem to me that you sell "knickknacks, leftover stock, old junk and, last but not least, cheap Chinese stuff"... you sell NEW items...
Kind regards.

·3 years agoyou sold a pair of shoes for 290 euros in condition (new-other)
Then you sold the battery in condition (new)
And even the shoes for 99 euros currently on sale are (new)
I challenge you to sell these items remotely with bank transfer, Postepay or PayPal in friends-and-family mode on another marketplace.
If you don't want to devote yourself to that then you have to try the in-person exchange with cash payment on another marketplace (always hoping that you live in a big city) because if you're in a small village.......
Give it a try, then maybe come back here and let us know how the sales went, after how long you sold and for how much you managed to sell the item.
Kind regards.

·3 years agoNo, you’re not wrong.
Until you’re considered a reliable seller, your funds will be held for at least 15 days or even longer... compared to the usual 2 days in normal cases.
Kind regards.
