Good evening.
I bought an item from a private user in France.
The item was clearly non-compliant.
I contacted the seller and he told me that I could return it and that he would refund me after receiving it.
I did not open any dispute.
I’m wondering: can I trust him? Or does he have to reimburse me for the return shipping costs first?

in these cases, to protect yourself, it's better to open the proper procedure, remembering that in any case the seller must provide you with a shipping label or pay you in advance for the return shipping:
Return an item in exchange for a refund | eBay
If you pay for the return yourself, you won't have any guarantee that you'll be refunded.
Trust is good, but not trusting is better.
