Expenses for which Protection?
Summary: mimmopell1964 expresses concern about the "Purchase Protection" fees on a platform, questioning the need for additional protection fees when existing guarantees covered items not received or as described. They criticize high commission rates and pricing discrepancies due to fees. daxsisko and sika700 clarify that commissions are now paid by buyers, which might lead sellers to lower prices, potentially absorbing previous commission costs. aracnotto shares their positive experience, noting that while prices may need adjusting, the new structure allows sellers to earn slightly more. They acknowledge that other platforms use similar practices successfully. Participants engage in a detailed discussion about changes in fee structures and their implications for buyers and sellers.
Good morning: is everyone happy with “Purchase Protection”? Who needs protecting? Buyers already had eBay’s guarantee for items not received or items that didn’t match the description. Weren’t the high fees eBay takes on every single sale enough, even calculating shipping costs too (crazy to total it up with shipping!)? And then that listing you posted at one price and end up seeing marked up with those annoying cents? The buyer pays them, yes, but in any case whoever buys sees a different price from the one you offer. All just to make money, and the services (like contact with a human on the phone disappearing!) are fewer and fewer. Bye everyone, Mimmo

·yesterday at 6:13 PMBut why do you reply to everyone the same way?
Yes, the sales commission for private sellers is paid by the buyer if you sell in Italy. It's clear. They have already written it 4 or 5 times

·2 weeks agoHi, personally I’m totally fine with it! Even by lowering prices (I mostly sell used books for 1 / 2 euros) I make a few cents more than before.
Now I don’t pay the fixed 35 cents per transaction (even if it was cancelled by the buyer);
now I don’t pay the % on the total (shipping included, an annoying thing if a necessary one).
Now the fees, in the form of "buyer protection", are paid by the buyer and the cost is shown in all listings, so the buyer who reads it knows how much they’re paying you as the seller and how much goes to the site instead.
This type of fee is used on other platforms with great and proven success (see especially Vinted), since eBay had to run for cover by copying its use to try to hold back its advance...
The annoying cents? If you really can’t stand them, tweak your price down or up and the problem is solved...
As for contacts, sadly already weak before, let’s draw a veil over that...

OP2 weeks agoThanks for the reply, but let me understand: eBay no longer takes the commission percentage on the total sale? So only the buyer will pay? Then you’re right about the cents that I can remove, but that means making the listing, seeing the price, and going back to edit it for a rounded price.... or doing the calculations first.... oh well, we’ll get used to it.... So, going back to the fees, are you telling me that only the buyer will pay? Thanks a lot, have a good evening Mimmo

·2 weeks agoExactly, only the buyer pays.
For the cents... Every time you list something for sale, next to the price you set, the increased one with the "buyer protection" also appears, which is what the buyer sees... Then you can "play" with rounding...

OP2 weeks agoThanks again, yes, I saw it by editing a listing just now. Very kind of you, meanwhile I also saw your page, which can always come in handy. I’m passionate about hi-fi from the years we’ve "lived through". Just for your availability and kindness, saying THANK YOU is superfluous.... If you ever need advice on stereo equipment, feel free to ask (no obligation whatsoever). Best regards

·2 weeks agoFor private sellers, the fees are paid by the buyer... this is the correct understanding of the "purchase protection"...
Kind regards.

OP2 weeks agoThanks for the reply. So you're telling me that the commission on the sale that the seller used to pay is no longer there and only the buyer will pay? If that’s really the case, I’ll definitely be the first to lower the price!!! Can you confirm? Anyway, thanks again, best wishes and have a good evening Mimmo

·2 weeks agoYes, exactly, if you sell in Italy, of course.
Kind regards.

·2 weeks ago · Editedactually the buyer protection for buyers could be read in another way: that the already ( ......meager...... ) seller protection will be reduced even further, since now it’s the buyers who pay the fees ........ in truth, it’s likely that many private sellers will lower prices in order to sell, effectively taking on, in whole or in part, the fees they used to pay ......
...... I hope I’m wrong, but when you think the worst.......

OP2 weeks agoThanks for the reply. So you're telling me that the commission on the sale that the seller paid is no longer there and only the buyer will pay? If that's really the case, I'll certainly be the first to lower the price!!! Can you confirm? Anyway, thanks again, best regards, and have a nice evening Mimmo

·2 weeks ago · Editedexactly, the buyer pays it.......... obviously if then you lower the selling price, in the end it can happen that in practice you take on - in whole or in part - the commissions you used to pay before ...... so you have to do the math carefully.....
